Naturalisation

Post by koetsier » Fri Sep 04, 2009 2:57 pm

Once i have naturalised can i apply for a passport in another country? I have been offered a job in the USA but wont go until i have naturalised as i intend to return the UK. Once i have submitted my application via NCS can i then get a work visa for USA in my passport or would this affect the outcome of my citizenship?

I'm not sure whether you can do what you propose.
One of the seven basic qualifying requirements for citizenship is that the applicant intends to continue living in the UK. However, as you indicate that you intend to return to the UK you may be justified in applying before you go to the USA.
However, if you look at this page :

http://ukinusa.fco.gov.uk/en/passports/ ... -documents

it only seems to envisage a UK or BOC birth certificate as proof of your citizenship for first-time passport applicants. Perhaps they don't mention a certificate of naturalisation because they never expect to see such an application, but that doesn't mean it isn't legal. Maybe it is linked to the requirement of continued residence in the UK, so they wouldn't do it - (but it wouldn't be for them to judge your right to citizenship, you would have already got it)

I don't know whether anyone else has a better idea.

Why not get your naturalisation, apply for your Brit passport and get the US visa in that?

Do appreciate that once the "application successful" is issued you have only 3 months to attend a Citizenship Ceremony. It is at that ceremony that you will be presented with your Certificate of Naturalisation. Until you have that certificate in your hands, you are not British!

So what do you intend to do? Fly back to the UK for your Citizenship Ceremony? Or make a special request to have your ceremony at a British mission in the US?

Having got your Certificate of Naturalisation, you can apply for your British Passport, either in the UK, or at any British Mission abroad.
