I have always been fascinated with Australia. From the unique social and cultural aspects to the beautifully diverse ecosystems, I have found Australia to be an amazing country and have wanted to live there for some time.
Right now, I in a bit of a lull in life and would like to move somewhere new and exciting while still remaining in relative comfort socially and materialistically. I think Australia would be the perfect place to live.
Currently, I live in Michigan, USA. It is cold, the career prospects are minimal, and I don't feel that I can live here much longer. I am planning to move as soon as I finish my Master's degree. However, I have a few paths that I can follow. I am awaiting response back from several universities about admission to graduate MFA studies in film/video production. If I am selected, I will be attending school for the next 3 years. However, if I am not selected, I plan to move to a warmer climate and work, saving my money.
I realize emigrating to Australia requires time and money. I figure I will have three years to save sufficient funds if I attend school. However, I will not have much career experience. If I don't get my film degree, I will have experience, but I am not sure how well I will do as far as money goes.
My credentials so far are good, I believe, but I have completed some of preliminary test for a skilled worker visa, and I don't meet the criteria for that. This summer, I will complete my Master of Arts degree in English Language & Literature (with a concentration in Creative Writing) qualifying me to teach community college here in America. I have substitute taught kindergarten through high school for two years, and I have worked as a graduate assistant in our department's Writing Center this school year. I also have a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Telecommunications, Information Studies and Media (emphasizing video production).
If I complete an MFA in film/video production, I will be qualified to instruct at the university level (both undergraduates and graduates) as an MFA is considered a terminal degree here in America.
As far as a career plan, I would like to work in film/video production or some other closely related field. I was looking at Sydney as my sort of dream spot as I like the climate there and it seemed to be located in a good position to allow me to explore the country. As I understand it, Sydney is also a good city for media production.
I would like to know what steps I can take to help ensure that I can move to Australia within the next few years, if there are any Australian consulates located near Michigan that would be able to assist me with the transition to Australia from America, if there are any programs that would allow me to work/live in Australia in the near future (especially within media production).
