Do I need to give up my passport / BRP when applying?

Post by cc86 » Fri Sep 13, 2019 5:20 pm

I am eligible to apply for citizenship but I've decided to hold off until next year because I have several trips outside the UK already planned over the next few months. I was under the impression that I would have to give up my passport and BRP (I have ILR) until my application was processed/approved but having read different topics I'm not so sure this is actually true if I book an appointment at a UKVCAS service centre. Is this right? Will I need to be without my passport/BRP and therefore be unable to travel or will the service centre make copies and send them off with my application allowing me to keep my passport and be free to travel?

Thanks in advance for any help! :)

The day you apply you must meet the residency requirements.

With the new system, the date of application is the date you submit and pay online.

Once you apply, you will have to attend UKVCAS for biometrics. (biometrics date is irrelevant)

You will upload scanned copies.

UKVCAS will verify and return your original documents including passport and brp.

You are free to travel after.
