Post by cochin007 » Tue Sep 21, 2010 6:44 pm

I am applying for contract jobs. Can any one guide me what should i do to get work. Is it easy to create my own company? or i have to work under something called umbrella company? I am new to UK and need some advice.. Is umbrella company better and any one good to approach?
Is it % basis to the company? whats the best market rate?

before you post such questions, please research over the web first.

You have not posted about the type of work/ skills/ experience.

I am in SAP and if on contracting avg sal of 5000 pounds is wat i am expecting. Dont want to show too much expenses since I will not make up for the points if i do so....
So wanted to check out other's views....

Cochin,

Points for visa are calculated before taxes and on your net salary - so whatever you get as gross will count towards points.

You can use umbrella companies - forget the internet, there's enough info on this forum alone to get all your answers so just spend an hour and search for these. They cut a certain percentage of your salary, ensure you pay the right taxes, cut correct NI and give you tax free cash in hand - and again - what you get as pay is counted as income BEFORE taxes and agency fees are cut out. Whatever you earn by working for a company counts for points as you pay tax on them.

You can open up a company as well but, if I am not mistaken, you need to manage expenses and ensure you follow all the tax rules etc - it gets even more entangled if you are jobless for a month or so and then back into contracting again - I am completely ignorant of setting up a company so I say this from a lay person's view - and again, search this forum and you will get all your answers

you say you are applying for contract jobs. i think your priority should be getting a contract first. you can worry about the contracting mode later ...and it is the easier part
