Do I need a Leave To Remain?

I am confused (again)... :roll:

I have a WHV that allows me to stay in the country for another 12 months.

I will apply for a HSMP now.

Assuming I attain a HSMP now, what will happen for the next 12 months? Can I leave and return to the UK?

Do I need a LTR or can I stay within the country on my WHV?
