Needing to move out of country while waiting for citizenship verdict. What about address?

Post by sythgara » Mon Apr 28, 2025 9:45 am

Hello all!

I recently finalised my biometrics for my UK citizenship.
The stress I'm currently facing is that I'm splitting up with a partner and best scenario atm is going back home to live with my family for a x amount of time to recuperate financially and regroup. I won't have an address here anymore and I'm wondering how easy would it be to nominate a friends address and potentially the phone number. I know it says the approval would be via email but I think invitation to ceremony is via mail, correct?

I have the ilr so travel wise I'm OK. It's just the address and phone contact really. I would be able to come and stay with friends while waiting for passport I'm sure. Which also begs the question of which address do I give for that application? I heard they'd need to confirm my address. Or my friends in this case, and maybe even shed have to come confirm her identity as well.

Can anyone advise?

Thank you for your time.

The ceremony invitation will arrive via email. You moving out of the UK indefinitely just after submitting your application is not ideal as you would need to communicate that to UKVI if that is where you will live (you can't just nominate a firend's address, UKVi would find out you are abroad). The main reason I am saying this is that moving abroad without a return date may cast doubt on your future intentions to stay in the UK. No need to confirm addresses or your friend's identity etc. Would you be able to at least come and go from your family's house back to the UK, and stay at your friend's as you do that? You can then tell UKVI your friends' address is your new address.

Yes I'd be able to return. I'd have stay here a while anyway since after the ceremony, as far as I know, I'd lose my ILR status and would have to remain until I have the UK passport done. What I meant about nominating the address would indeed be notifying UKVI that I'd be staying with her (at least to take care of those final steps.)

It's realy not ideal but I can't imagine I'd be the only one it happened to.

Something I saw recently on these boards and maybe even on reddit (I'm not sure hwo it is) that the intent to remain applies mostly 'at the time of application' but I can imagine why it would be bit sus if everyone just moved out straight after getting a passport.

Let me clarify: the bit that would be an issue is you moving out without a return date while you wait for an outcome. As you state, it is mostly evaluated on the date of application, but you did declare that you intend to live here and not leave for more than 6 months so you should attempt not to do so. Once you obtain your first UK passport while in the UK you are free to leave.

Ok, thank you. I'll have to see what I can do
