New citizenship rules

Post by CatBrom » Mon Sep 07, 2026 12:38 pm

Hi all,

Unsure if anyone here has seen the news about new rules coming in for citizenship, namely, that reckonable residence will increase to 8 years from 5. This is pretty devastating to me as I'm so close to applying for citizenship in November. I've lived here for 11 years now, but 6 of those were while I was completing my studies so they aren't reckonable...to have this now is very sad. I can only hope that the new rules aren't implemented soon.

my sense is it'll be months before these changes actually get implemented. my gut feel is November should still be ok for you. finger's crossed!

Minister is reported as saying the new laws will be in place by the end of the year. https://www.rte.ie/news/ireland/2026/09 ... -ceremony/
