New name because of change of Religion

Post by riponrahman » Mon Aug 27, 2007 5:54 am

Hi,

I have decided to apply in canada for immigration. Before that i want to clarify one issue, if any body helps me out that will be great.

10 years back, i have converted my religion from Christian to Muslim because of my marriage and i have changed my name by affidavit with the help of notary public according to the Government rules. For the last 10 years, i have been using my new name in profession as well as in passport. But all of my previous documents such as educational documents, family relations certificate are in my old name.

Now, if i apply, i have to use my new name as because for last 10 years i am using this name.

I am bit afraid whether it gonna makes any problem for my immigration or not.

In advance want to thanks to every one for their valuable time and comments

As long as you have the official documentation to prove you have legally changed your name I don't think there will be a problem.

On the simplified application form there is a space for 'any previous names used'. This is where you would put your 'old' name.

When you get your 90-day letter and have to fill in the more indepth forms, you will then need to explain in detail why you changed your name and attach copy (or original?) of legal document which entitled you to do this legally.

The only drawback is it might draw out the background checks a bit?
