Newby, need help with my plans

Post by kdub » Thu May 01, 2008 1:17 am

Hi all,
iv been reading up on immigration for what seems like months! i am all set to start an access course this year, which will then lead me to do a course on Counselling Psychology at uni next year, then hopefully, leading me to a doctorate in Counselling psychology. i know i probably sound like a stupid kid (im 21) living in a fantasy land but i know what i want to do with my life and where i want to do it, and thats america.

i have always had it in my mind that il move to america one day, particularly N.Y or SanFran, and practice there, i just love the place, iv never been a country person and city life is just for me, i love the people, the culture and the whole way of life is just so appealing to me, but from what iv been reading it seems near impossible for me to reach this goal, and thats just not an option for me.

If i do go on to get my doctorate in counselling psychology will this help me to emigrate to the USA? im really feeling disheartened about the whole thing now as i cant even think about not ever moving there, its my ultimate dream and to even consider the possibility of not being able to make the move is devastating to me! hope someone can help me.

Are you currently studying for a Bachelors? Would you have any work experience? If you are planning on studying for a Phd, the best thing is to study in the US. There are quite a number of (good) universities that can provide financial assistance (read about what they offer on the university's website), most of which could cover you (more or less) for the whole duration of the degree. Once you are in the US it may be easier to look for employers (or take any tests you need to do to become a counsellor).

You can see if you qualify for the DV lottery: http://www.immigrationboards.com/viewtopic.php?t=19197
