NHS Hospital treatment and HSMP

Post by tech » Mon Aug 23, 2004 11:05 pm

Kaya/All

Please read the following and share your thoughts. If possible please answer my question listed after this statement.

" Under the current Regulations, anyone who is engaging in employment with an employer who has his principle place of business in the UK, or who is a self-employed person whose principle place of business is in the UK is fully exempt from National Health Service (NHS) hospital charges in England. This exemption applies to your spouse and children (under the age of 16 or 19 if in further education) if they are living with you in the UK on a permanent basis.

Please note that to be exempt from NHS hospital charges on this basis you must be in employment at the time you receive treatment. If you are here on a work visa but currently unemployed you will be charged for your treatment, unless you are otherwise exempt from charges. "

Thinking of a practical situation,if one works on contract basis, happened to be between projects at the time when the treatment is required, would he/she will be charged for treatment.

I am not sure about authenticity of Umbrella companies letters. I seriously doubt whether these letters would prove helpful for this kind of situation.

Your response is appreciated.

This is in theory. In practice, once you register with a GP and get an NHS card you become eligible to NHS services forever. This does not stop even if you become illegal.

True tnavon, You don't need to be on job while availing NHS treatments. I was in UK over a work permit and had around 1 month gap between two contracts and was getting treatment without any problems.

So once you got NHS card, you are entitled for free treatment which is awesome though as you have to wait for months for specialist check up.

Go for private health care if you want to jump the queues

BTW, if it is an emergency - no one gives a damn about NHS registrtaion , automatic free treatment is accorded..
Where there is a will there is a way.
