non-Eu married to EU - pps # and Child Benefit

Post by SarahWW » Mon Nov 01, 2010 9:16 pm

So, after 2 months of being here in Ireland, I'm still spinning in frustration. Wondering if anyone knows what, exactly, I should do next.

I am American and my husband is Dutch. He is employed here in Ireland. We have one child. So, like a good mom, I filled out the Child Benefit form and sent it in. While the form said it was normally paid to the mother, it said it could also be paid to other people. And since my husband is the employed EU citizen with a PPS number, I filled it out under his name. Big mistake. Needless to say, it was returned to me with a letter with bolded underlining stating that *I* have to fill it out.

Oh, and they also nicely included with another copy of the CB1 form a Habitual Residency Form, which was so totally unnecessary.

But here's the thing. The letter also says I *must* get a PPSN. Now, I sent in my EU1 application a few weeks ago (my husband only gets paid once a month, so sending in two payslips kinda put a hold on it) and my understanding was that I could not get a PPSN until I got my passport back from them. But now I see online that I might've gotten one before I mailed my passport in to Dublin? I'm confused.

But my main concern is getting this CB1 in. I'm already down 300 with them, I don't want to wait around until I'm down 600. How necessary is it to have a PPSN for me on the application? Or is there another way for me to quickly get a PPSN?

without ppsn nothing can be done,so you really need to apply for one and your passport is needed for the process.

PPS Numbers for children living in, but not born in Ireland must be applied for by the parent/guardian. It is necessary for one of the parents/guardian to have a PPS Number in order for the child to be registered and linked with their data.

The parent/guardian should provide evidence of his/her own identity, address and evidence of the date of birth of the child, for example, the child's own passport or child's entry on the parent's passport. If the child was born in the United Kingdom a Birth Certificate may also be used as evidence of the date of birth.

You kinda need the PPS no to get things done around here. Its like social security number in the states. Below is the complete guide how to get PPS no and what docs you will need. If you dont have bill/bank statement in your name as proof of address then your landlord or spouse can provide you with a reference letter (who already has a PPS no) to you or write it on the back of the utility bill. Current waiting time is around 2-3 weeks, depending on where you reside. I know it sucks waiting for it even though clearly your hubby would be parent/guardian of the child and he has PPS no but to say mommy has to have one its delay tactics in my opinion...few hundred bobs saved for the state.
