Not sure what my status is?

My mother was born in Italy and lived her early and teenage years in the USA and was a US citizen. She then moved the UK (aged 19) and has lived here ever since (she is 52 now)

My father moved from italy to the UK when he was 12 and still lives and runs his own business here in the UK at age 62.

I was born in the UK in 1980 and therefore I assume that I automatically became a British citizen?

When I was 6 we moved to the USA for 1 year and then returned to the UK. After that my parents made me a USA citizen but I have always lived in the UK with an 'indefinite leave to enter the UK' stamp in my USA passport.

I have a UK birth certificate, NI Number, Drivers licence and NHS card.

Can I apply for a UK passport?

Would there be any restrictions on me working for the UK government?

If you were born in the United Kingdom before 1 January 1983, you are almost certainly a British citizen. The only exception is if you were born to certain diplomatic staff of foreign missions who had diplomatic immunity.
