In order to get a work permit you must have a job offer in place. This often leads to a chicken-and-egg situation, which can be very frustrating. Your best bet is to apply directly to companies or get work in a company with offices in the UK and then get yourself transferred. See http://www.workpermit.com/uk/employee1.htm .

Hi Mayfly,

Some of the job sites have that as a dislaimer for any job. You won't get very far if you adhere to it. I will only ignore the jobs that are posted where it specifically states in the job description that the company "will not sponsor work permits". All others are fair game. Also it helps if you have UK contact details such as an address, E-mail and voice mail. I use my friend's address (with their permission of course) , you can easily get an E-mail address at sites such as Yahoo etc and there are many voice over Email services as well, just do a web search for the service that would be best for you.

Hope ths helps,

WC

thank you hector and worldcitizen!

woldcitizen, when you say i should give u.k. contact details, should i put these on my cv? i do have phone numbers/ contact address in the u.k, but then what if they contact me at the u.k address and i'm not there to answer the call? should i state that i am a canadian citizen but have accomodation/phone number in the u.k. so if i'm hired i don't have to look for a place to live etc? i have applied for lots of jobs, but no response just yet

Go to www.frostbyte.co.uk to get your free UK messaging service. Then you will get voice and fax forwarded to your e-mail wherever you are in the world. Also get a UK E-mail address i.e. yahoo.co.uk , you don't want your CV to get passed up because of your address. Also register your online CV at www.gojobsite.co.uk and www.jobserve.co.uk and renew them DAILY. You will get responses, guaranteed.

Hey WorldCitizen, have some recruiters/employers started filtering out an CV just because it had .com and not .co.uk? I know that there are UK email addresses that end in .com [like btinternet.com], so I think it's silly if they actually did this...

Hi Herman,

No, I doubt that they would filter out non country specific first level domains such as .com .org .tv etc but they could for country specific (.ca .au .br) etc... Funny thing though, last week for one day I accidently uploaded my Canadian details to gojobsite, I had messages on my mobile here from Britain about a job you could have taken all me experience and qualifications for a made up a job from that, the fit was perfect! But as we all know and have come to love the chicken and the egg WP issue came up, so I was out of luck for that one. Really gets me when you see the same job being posted for weeks on end after you have been denied simply because of the WP issue.

thanks for those links worldcitizen, i just browsed through and there seems to be a good selection of jobs...i am going to apply with u.k. contact details. when would you suggest is a good time to bring up the fact that i need a work permit?! after i get an interview or right when i get one or after it's over and i have an offer?! it's all so confusing! i wish being a canadian citizen meant it would be easier to get u.k. citizenship!

i just can't imagine not moving and permanently settling there...i see my future and i see myself in the u.k.! why are they making it so difficult

No Problem Mayfly, I wish you luck on your search. You will have to be persistent in your quest, it has been TWO YEARS since I had to leave the UK at the end of my WHV, I never in my wildest dreams thought that I would be still waiting for a suitable job and WP.

You will probably get asked about your visa/citizenship situation when you return the recruiter's voicemail. I am usually up front about it, I don't want to waste my time with an employer that is either set against WPs or simply not up to speed on how simple the process is.

I too don't see myself settling anywhere else but London, and it is a hard pill to swallow knowing that my the UK is where my ancestors are from, BUT I miss out on the ancestry visa by one generation while someone from any other EU country, (even a former enemy) which my grandfather fought against to keep the UK free, has more rights than I do, but life ain't fair as they say is it?

At the end of the day you just have to try and keep a positive attitiude about the situation (as hard as it may be on some days).

Hey WC, thanks for the tip. Regarding that perfect match job, I wonder if a possibility was to tell them that workpermit.com can arrange the WP for them, and if they seem reluctant to pay workpermit.com fees, offer to pay them yourself? I know it's going to be like a thousand quid out of your own pocket, but I was thinking of using that as a "last resort" to get over to Britain...

Last year, I was offered a job in Wimbledon provided I myself paid for the immigration-lawyer fees which they told me would amount to £600. I didn't take it because soon after I got transferred to the UK by my current company, but offering to pay yourself is certainly a way to boost your CV.

Hi Hector, I was wondering, what company was this? Because around last summer, I interviewed with a company based in Wimbledon too, but they decided not to hire at all due to the weakening economy... If you'd like to correspond privately, you may send me a private message. Thanks.

I never knew the name of the company, I only dealt with them through an employment agency. And, before somebody ask me the name of the agency... I don't remember
