alx Junior Member Member # 3164 | Posted May 30, 2002 02:54 PM I came to UK 1.5 years ago and registered with police after arrival. But I wasn't aware that I need to amend detail every time I change address or job. So changed job and moved to another address and another job and another address, and only then I figured out that I was supposed to change registration details every time. I went to police and changed my details to my last address and job, however they don't have anything in their records about my second job and address. I've read that failure to change details could result in fine up to J5000 and/or 6 month imprisonment. Should I worry in my case? Should I go to police and explain them everything? PS. Would it affect in any way when I apply in 3 years for an ILR? Thank you, I would be grateful for any advice. |
Sanwar Member Member # 104 | Posted May 30, 2002 04:37 PM Hi I suggest in practice you will probably be ok. I would suggest that in future you try and adhere to the legal requirements of your status. Sanwar -------------------- Sanwar Ali (Chairman) |
binary Member Member # 90 | Posted May 30, 2002 08:05 PM Hi All, Who is required to register with police? If I am from India... do I have to worry about registering with police. Where can I find more information on this subject. Kindly advice. regards, |
Alex the Warrior unregistered | Posted May 30, 2002 08:26 PM If you check your workpermit carefully you will see that you must register with the police within 7 days. You can also see excerpt from current laws on the backside of the green registration certificate -- basically you have to tell the police about any significant changes: new job, address, name etc. Its a good idea NOT to assume anything about immigration laws and pro-actively learn everything on your own. |
binary Member Member # 90 | Posted May 30, 2002 08:51 PM Hi All, How to rectify the status quo (i.e not registering with Police so far)on this police regsitration issue - if its been almost 2.5 years after entering the UK. Anybody on work permit who has not registerd so far - can you share some thoughts please - in case anybody has taken any legal advice on this issue - please kindly share. regards. |
binary Member Member # 90 | Posted May 30, 2002 08:54 PM Hi Alex the Warrior, What is this "green registration certificate" you have mentioned? regards. |
Alex the Warrior unregistered | Posted May 30, 2002 09:01 PM You get green certificate when you register in the police, you are supposed to show it to immigration officers when you go back to this country -- your passport will be stamped with registration info. ALL foreigners who arrive for more than 6 months (to study for example) MUST register. Text on your workpermit document states that you must register in police within 7 days, check it out. I can't help you with advice on what to do about not being registered for years. |
binary Member Member # 90 | Posted May 30, 2002 09:06 PM Thanks for your inputs - Alex the Warrior! Much appreciate it! regards. |
kay38 Member Member # 3201 | Posted May 30, 2002 09:27 PM ALL foreigners who arrive for more than 6 months (to study for example) MUST register. This information is wrong- not ALL foreigners must register with the police! If you are a national of a COMMONWEALTH country, you do not need to register- see the home office website: http://www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk/default.asp?PageId=2763 (section 2.3). Binary, since you are an INDIAN citizen and therefore a COMMONWEALTH country citizen, you are not required to register! |
binary Member Member # 90 | Posted May 30, 2002 09:39 PM Hi Alex the warrior, Since India is a member of Commonwealth, I am exempt from police registration. Visit http://www.legion.ca/english/memcomm.htm for list of countries in CW membership. Just to update your know-how! What a peace of mind now! WOW! regards. |
binary Member Member # 90 | Posted May 30, 2002 09:42 PM Hi Kay38, Sorry for wrongly typing your nick name as aka. Thanks for your inputs. best regards. |

Deleted Member Member # 128 | Posted May 31, 2002 10:04 AM From the link kay38 gave above: “An immigration officer should endorse the passport of any foreign national who has been admitted as described above with the requirement to register with the police. I’m from Mexico, and maybe because I’m a non-visa national, my passport was not stamped with the police registration requirement, thus I didn’t do it. I have travelled several times abroad and had no problem whatsoever when coming back into the UK. [ May 31, 2002: Message edited by: Héctor ] |
david Member Member # 9 | Posted May 31, 2002 04:17 PM From what i have seen of other people's experiences, everyone who has been required to register with the police have one thing in common - they are all visa nationals. As far as I know, I have never heard of a non-visa national ever having to register with the police. |
greatsri1 Junior Member Member # 3653 | Posted June 03, 2002 10:31 PM I think its a question of whether he/she is from one of the common wealth countries. I don't think it depends on Visa or Non-Visa national. I think in case of India, since it is a common walth contry they don't have to register(inspite of being visa national). |
Alex the Warrior unregistered | Posted June 04, 2002 02:00 AM I must say that having to register in police is actually good because it adds additional credibility to whatever I say to immigration officers every time I cross the borders, and knowing that they can refuse entry this is rather helpful! Given 2 documents - your passport issued by non-UK authorities and registration paper issues by UK-authorities I know which one they would trust more! |
shah_jee Junior Member Member # 3105 | Posted June 04, 2002 10:35 AM If one is not required by law to register with Police, I don't see any benefit in doing so voluntarily, as it'll add more trouble cause then you have to keep the Police informed everytime you make a move like (Job, residence, status change etc etc). And as far as credibility of documents is concerned, If your non UK passport with a UK entry clearance and UK workpermit is not enough to let you in, then Police report won't help either [ June 04, 2002: Message edited by: shah_jee ] [ June 04, 2002: Message edited by: shah_jee ] |

herman Member Member # 12 | Posted June 04, 2002 05:12 PM On an interesting note, the London Metropolitian Police is beginning a recruitment drive aimed at foreigners abroad! The link is below: http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/uk/england/newsid_2023000/2023989.stm |
Alex the Warrior unregistered | Posted June 04, 2002 05:21 PM They should offer ILR for 2 years of service and they won't have any shortage of candidates Note: this post is a joke in regards to post above. [ June 04, 2002: Message edited by: Alex the Warrior ] |
User Member Member # 3726 | Posted June 04, 2002 07:52 PM Alex, Your answers are helpful but I would have to say it is totally insane to have the last post of yours in this thread which does'nt make any sense at all (at least to the question we are dealing in this thread) Good luck to you! |
