Hello,

Here is my situation. My current work permit is expiring this month. My employer applied for an extension, but did not send my passport with the application as I travel frequently. About a week after the application for an extension the work permitsUK office sent a letter to my employer stating:

The work permit extension is granted and the employee now has permission to work. We have passed on the case to the in country decision team who will decide the leave to remain aspect of the case and notify you[the employer] in writing. If leave to remain is not granted the employee should stop work immediatly'

I was going out of the country to visit some friends in Germany anyway so I thought I would take the letter with me and get another stamp at Heathrow. This is where the problem started. The immigration officer was not familiar with this particular sort of letter and did not like the fact that it stated that an in country team will be deciding the immigration aspect of the case. I explained my problem to him that I could not give up my passport for 2 month etc and he went to talk with his supervisiors. To make a long story short after I had a chat with the chief immigration officer I realised that they would not budge. Their position was: What if the incountry team decides to deny you leave to remain and we have stamped it into your passport? In the end they stamped leave to remain for two more month into my passport, time to sort it all out as it were.

Now here is my question. Where do I go from here? Will the in-country team write to my employer, telling them the leave to remain has been approved and now they want the passport for endorcement? If so will it take them 10 weeks to do this? And with that letter will I be able to get a new stamp at heathrow?

Any comments on this situation are welcome. I am going to talk with the legal secretary at our company who handles the work permit sometime in the next few days, but I wanted to see what everyone on this board thought...
