katty151 Junior Member Member # 4544 | Posted August 10, 2002 01:41 AM I currently live in North america and am accustomed to a particular style of cv. Apprently, the British-style cv is quite different (longer, more detailed). Can anyone tell me the name of a website that shows not only tips and customs, but actual examples or templates of good cv's? THANKS! |

No responses. I did buy some books during my trip to London from Financial Times Press. I don't have them handy. You can send me an e-mail at hnpandit@yahoo.com and I can send you the names of the books. I also have a format for an IT CV that was mailed to me by a recruiter. I can dig that up. Don't buy any books from USA. Also, some services in UK are bogus. I did see discussion about CVs related to some other topics. However, search on workpermit.com by word always fails (atleast for me). |

At least they emailed me a couple of sample CVs. CV help can also be obtained from monster.co.uk jobserve.com jobsite.co.uk reed.co.uk elan.co.uk |

mahomed Junior Member Member # 327 | Posted August 10, 2002 03:23 PM Hi There is usually a confusion between the American "Resume" and the British "CV". The Resume is shorter and to the point and normally not longer than one or two pages. The CV gives more detailed information although it works in more or less the same way as the Resume. Some great sites are: http://www.bradleycvs.co.uk/ http://www.gojobsite.co.uk and http://www.hotjobs.com (Although this one is an american site, the tips still work for a CV) Good Luck!! |

herman Member Member # 12 | Posted August 12, 2002 10:14 PM Hey Katty, I ran across a similiar dilemma when trying to convert from the US resume to the British CV. I found a company that did a really good job, and it's at www.aperfectcv.co.uk They can be contacted at: cvs@perfectcv.demon.co.uk Hope that helps.

Ala Member Member # 4611 | Posted August 15, 2002 07:13 PM Turning a Resume into a CV by Allan Hoffman Summary Turning your American-style resume into a CV should not be a much-dreaded ordeal. The changes may simply be a matter of expanding job descriptions, adding personal details and including a summary of your skills and experience. Refer to our sample CV as you revise your resume. Here is a how-to guide to help you in the process: Quick TipsYou've spent the last weekend writing and rewriting your resume, and now you learn you need something else entirely -- a curriculum vitae. Take a deep breath, calm down and prepare for some reassuring advice: · A curriculum vitae is essentially another name for a resume. In other words, you don't need to prepare for a wholesale reworking of your resume, so much as you need to think about adding detail and reordering what you already have. · Is your brief, American-style resume acceptable to a potential international employer? It may be. Check with the company. · US companies looking for workers to live abroad will still want a US-style resume. Don't bother with a CV. 1. At the start of your CV (along with your address and contact information) include personal details typically left out of a resume -- namely, your marital status and nationality. 2. Write a summary of your skills and experience as an introduction to potential employers. Our sample CV accomplishes this with a list of positions held and an overview of the applicant's previous responsibilities, accomplishments and skills. Think of this information, along with the other details in the first one or two pages of your CV, as a quick guide to the more in-depth descriptions that follow. 3. Add considerable detail to job descriptions. An American-style resume emphasizes brevity; a CV does not. In a CV, job descriptions, rather than telegraphing details, should explain employment in depth, with references to specific projects, responsibilities and accomplishments. Consider the differences between the following two job descriptions. The first describes the position adequately for a resume, but the second (for the CV) enhances the description, giving the potential employer a much deeper sense of the applicant's work experience. Resume-style: CV-style: 5. Include details about any other special skills, interests and hobbies. You need not limit yourself to a single line outlining personal interests. Describe interests in detail, especially if they have some relevance to your potential success in an international position. [ August 15, 2002: Message edited by: Ala ] |
