I've been looking at permits and rules for Americans to work in the UK forever it seems, and I still don't understand. Is it possible for me, a recent college graduate to go to the UK and get a job? Permanent or temporary, either one. I've talked to people who have gone to the UK on visits and done bar work or babysitting without work permits, which I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to do. Is there a special permit to get just an average six-month job while visiting? (Like retail, hotel or restaurant work) Do UK employers take permanent employees from the US?
Thanks for any help,

very confused and frustrated

Sorry, the only legal routes open to you are:

1. Either get sponsored for a WP by a UK employer. or
2. Marry an EU wife. or
3. Be a student in the UK and work part time on terms and full time on vacations.

If you were a Canadian you would qualify for the WHM visa.

It seems that other immigration categories are irrelvant to you.

If you are a recent American graduate you may find the bunac program(www.bunac.org) to be a what you are looking for. It will let you work in the UK for a 6 month, but it cannot be extended.

Good luck!

Thanks for the replies- I should have come here right away. I've got some info on the Bunac program, and if all else fails, I'll do that. A few more questions though: Does anyone know where I can find info on UK employers sponsering work permits? Do you just apply for their positions and if they accept you, then they set up one for you?

less confused but still frustrated...

Bunac is indeed the only thing. But you can only do it if you've graduated from a US university in the past six months, it's only good for six months, and YOU are responsible for finding a (usually crap) job when you get here. Everyone I knew who did that last autumn got jobs after about two months, mostly in bars (which pften pay about $5/hour, and no one gives good tips here). Sorry to be so glum, but I have been here in the UK for over a year and a half now and recently got an extension on my student visa (doing an MA) through March. I have been trying desperately to find a way to stay without having to marry my boyfriend, who is English, but it's almost impossible if you are American. I have sent out about 200 applications and CVs over about four months and gotten ZERO interviews. I think they just disregard you immediately if you are American because in order to get a work permit they, as the employer, have to fill in an immigration form claiming that you are the only qualified candidate for the job, which was publicly advertised, and that there are no EU (not just UK but EU!) candidates available. It really sucks. It's equally impossible for Brits to get into the US.

Anyway, just thought I would let you know what's happening to someone in a similar siutation. I am not willing to stay here and work illegally as a babysitter (I am 23 and have two degrees for godsakes!). But good luck if you decide to do Bunac. In my experience, the only people who can come here from the US are either working for a huge multinational and get transferred, are married to a British person, or are incredibly wealthy spoiled American twentysomethings who come on Bunac and goof off for six months.
