Folks,

It has been a huge learning process for me and so I thought I would pen down my knowledge for those of you who may be interested to know.

Here is a general structure about the work permits extension program as I understand it:

Step 1: Send the work permit extension application with or without a passport to Work Permits (UK).

Step 2: Work permit is issued by the "Business Team" of Work Permits (UK).

Step 3: The "Business Team" approves a work permit extension which is a document that permits you to "work for a particular employer". This is conveyed to you in the form of a letter. This letter arrives before you get your passport back or ICD 0358 (explained in Steps 4 & 5)

Step 4: If a passport was submitted with the application in Step 1, the passport is handed over to the "In-Country Decision Team" of Work Permits (UK). They take 5 working days from the time they receive the passport from the "Business Team" to issue the LTR (Leave to Remain) which is a stamp in the passport which allows you to continue to "reside" in the UK. The passport is then mailed back to you.

Step 5: If a passport was not submitted with the application in Step 1, the In-Country Decision Team will issue a paper authority called ICD 0358. This document should be kept with your passport as a proof of your immigration status. I think even this document allows to you to "reside" in the UK, the only difference is that you have separate piece of paper as opposed to having a stamp in your passport. The ICD 0358 is also known as an "electronic visa".

Step 5: Once you get the ICD 0358, you go to the Head Office (HO) in Croydon to get the visa transferred to your passport. Or...(in case you are out of the country)...you can travel using the ICD 0358 and the visa officer at the port of entry can do the transfer once you return to the UK.

Clarifications:
1. The LTR and FLR (Further Leave to Remain) are both stamps in the passport and are commonly referred to as a visa. They are both issued for applicantls already in the UK.

2. The LTR is for first time applicants and the FLR is a 'further' leave to remain (i.e an extension of LTR).

3. The term LTE (Leave to Enter) is used for first time applicants when the applicant is not in the country.

3. It is possible to directly go the Head Office (HO) even before you get the ICD 0358 to get your LTR stamped in your passport, but they usually don't encourage it.

-Cheers

Thanks you to Hector and everyone else on the board for taking the time to answer my questions. Plz feel free to add to / correct this posting.

Undoubtedly many thanks to all those who have been helping out people here with their invaluable advice and insights. And in addition to that long list of people, many thanks to you (rapaka) as well for such an articulate and systematic description of the procedure called in for a WP Extension.

Here is some more clarification & information

If you send in an application without the passport, the LTR (or FLR) comes stamped on a ICD-0358 (formerly known as form 158) in 2-3 weeks.

The ICD-0358 is sent along with a form 0955 (which looks similar to the original work permit extension letter but also has your salary information as well).

You can call the In-Country Decision Team and ask them to expedite the process in case you are travelling soon and need a LTR/FLR stamp urgently.
