Hi, anyone knows if an oversea student can buy a property (a flat) in the UK and then have the rights to stay and work in the UK, please?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Anybody may buy a property in the UK or anywhere else in the world; you don't even have to be physically present in the UK to do so. This, however, does not give an individual any immigration/residence rights whatsoever. You'd merely be a foreigner who owns some property here.

Thanks a lot, Héctor.
But what is the point of owning a property if one cannot live in it? There gotto be a way to at least stay, otherwise how does one actually live in and look after the property?

There are some countires where foreigners are not permitted to buy property, but the UK is not one of them.

Well Inwie the average overseas student can't afford to buy property in the UK, that's usually reserved for the very wealthy. Usually their parents will buy them a flat so they have a place to live while they attend school and then once they are done they sell it. It's an investment and considering the housing boom there you'd probably get an excellent rate of return once you resell.

Foreigners (not necessarily wealthy but often so) buy properties in places they like so that they can stay there instead of a hotel when they visit. The example of American celebs buying houses in London comes to mind; people buying a summer house in Florida is another example.

In any event, there's no point in arguing over that. The fact is that owning a property does not give you any immigration rights. Otherwise foreigners would buy their way into the UK using a property and that doesn't make sense, does it? I'm not aware of any country whose laws are so relaxed as to contemplate this.

Even Saddam Hussein can buy property in the UK.

Please note one of the conditions of stay of student's visa is that he intends to leave the UK after he finishes his studies. (There is a concession for degree student who wants to get a WP in his profession).
In my view buying a property in the UK can be detrimentally interpreted by the IND as a proof that the student does not intend to leave the UK when he finishes his studies.

Thanks a lot for your helps. Seems this doesn't work out like I have supposed. I am not a student any more, I got a WP and work here now. But my gf is still studying a MA Pacific Asian Culture course. Due to the factor that she would like stay with me in this country, so she needs to find a job here. We all know this is hard for a graduate student without any proper working experience. I was lucky myself to get the WP as I am on IT, which falls to tier 2 now. So I am trying to consider early and looking for a work around for her. Anyway, seems I have to keep looking...
Thank you guys very much, any further suggestions would be appreciated.
