I am currently working towards qualifiying as an Architect in the UK under a TWES permit and am looking into the feasibility or possibility of remaining in the UK after I qualify.

However, as I understand the TWES permit rules, I must return back to the States once my professional qualification has been obtained but I would like to know if it is possible to do a 'TWES switch' (something of an urban myth as I have heard about it but actually seen or read nothing) and remain in Britain after gaining my professional qualification.

If no such thing as a 'TWES switch' is possible, my girlfriend (from the UK) and I are considering marriage as a solution. It's something we'd have liked to have done in our own time but if it is the only way to solve the problem of how I can remain in the UK then we'll go through with it.

The marriage option seems to be the preferred choice for several reasons. Continuing with my current TWES employers is financially uncertain. Marriage would ultimately allow me more job and financial freedom but I am unsure how long I would have to wait for a marriage visa and this is worrying.

Knowing how complicated seemingly straghtforward applications for permits and visas can become, I am feeling a little uneasy about what to do. I have found that most free sources of advice end up telling me what I already know and are very limited.

I am meeting with a solicitor next week to present him with my case and see what he suggests.

Any advise or information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I came to U.K. under the Twes scheme(though this was a mistake made by my company),but after a year this was converted to a normal Work Permit, and I have been here since. If you can justify the switch, there is an avenue out there which allows you to do it.
Surely your solicitor will know more, but in case he doesn't,tell him that it has happened quite a lot(I am not an exception by any means).
