AndyC Junior Member Member # 6742 | Posted January 08, 2003 03:25 AM Hi, my girl friend wants to visit UK for as long as possible. Unfortunatly she is a USA citizen and I'm a UK citizen. She would need to work to make some money to live and the holiday visa would of been perfect, but she's from the US, is there any way possible, that she can enter the UK and work? She's half way through College with no degree. I've been searching for months, from what I can see, the govourment wants us to get married for the hell of it, just so she can live here? I'm at my witt's end trying to figure this out, please help :/ -------------------- Andy |

Elisa Member Member # 2487 | Posted January 09, 2003 12:54 AM Well she could apply to finish her degree in England, that way she could work 20 hours per week on a student visa. Otherwise without a degree of any sort she won't be eligible for any sort of work permit. Short of getting married my best advice is finish school. Trust me I"m back at University now because I didn't finish my degree and working overseas is pretty near impossible without one. If you really care about each other then waiting til she gets a decent education should not be an obstacle. |

While she's here, as previous post suggests, why not try to get her enrolled to a University degree? That will cost, as she'd have to pay an overseas fee - but since she's from USA, you could explore some studentship opportunities. If she's alright in her studies, that's like 3-4 years of legal stay, plus 20 hours of part-time work during term time and 40 during holidays. Else... marry her and get her a spouse visa. |
saraliz Junior Member Member # 5739 | Posted January 10, 2003 05:47 PM There's always the option of her getting a work visa through BUNAC, which runs an exchange scheme for US students to work in the UK. A visa through the BUNAC scheme would allow her to come to the UK for up to six months, with full working rights. For info: www.bunac.org |
AndyC Junior Member Member # 6742 | Posted January 27, 2003 03:05 AM Thanks guys for all your help, that bunac looks to be very promissing, thanks guys What I was wondering, would it be possible, to go on the bunac program get a blue card, then also get a student visa? Is this even allowed? [ January 27, 2003: Message edited by: AndyC ] -------------------- Andy |

AndyC Junior Member Member # 6742 | Posted January 31, 2003 05:43 AM I'm 20, she's 19. I'm marry her tomorrow and I know she'd marry me no question, I guess I'm just old fashioned, I cant marry her just so we can be together, I love her to much for that.. but maybe that allown is enough? She's currently got her blue card for the UK, we are finding out exactly if she needs to goto london to get working visa etc. Things look set for her to come here MArch 3rd though, for 5 months. Way I see it, living together 5 months gives us the chance to see if we really want to be together, only thing is, I hope if we do get along, by me asking her to marry me, isnt taken for granted and she expecting it.. Time will tell I cant thank you guys enough -------------------- Andy |

AndyC Junior Member Member # 6742 | Posted April 04, 2003 02:09 PM I just wanted to pop back and say thanx for every thing. Jen has been here now for a month, got a job every thing worked out perfect. Basicly it took her 3 days to get her bluecard. They will even send you tax forms etc. because your not very likely in 6 months on a bluecard to earn morth then £4500, so you dont have to have tax taken out of your pay check. BUNAC did all this, for $250 I think it was. Its near enough impossible to get a bank account on a blue card, especially when you tell them that your only here for 6 months. I would recommend BUNAC to everyone, Who can apply for it, all it requires basicly that you was in fulltime (maybe part-time) education for the last sammester. Thanx Guys -------------------- Andy |

Andy Calderbank Junior Member Member # 7138 | Posted August 09, 2003 11:41 AM Hey guys, I couldn't thank you guys enough 6-7 months ago when Jen could come to live with me for 6 months. Jen's now been and gone a week and we've decided to get married. Does anyone have any information on exactly what we should be doing, I've heard from a friend awhile back that I need to get a fiance visa which gives us 3 months gap time to get married? Has anyone got any information on this, also the time scale. Whats the quickest way to do it? Also, if we was to get married in the UK instead of US, how do we go about it. You guys are the best, thanks alot. -------------------- -- |
