Hi all,

My girlfriend`s visitor status will be expiring very shortly. She has been here 6 months and was wondering is there any way for her to stay longer. Maybe even stay on a more permanent basis? We don`t want to go down the marraige road as yet!! We`re not too bothered about whether she could work as I`d sponsor and support her. Can she apply to stay here without having to return to Canada? Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks.

If she's from canada she's apart of the commonwealth community, and can get the holiday workers visa, although she may not wish to work, this visa does allow upto 2 years stay.

Hope this helps.
Good luck with the missus

I think she`s too old for this? She`s 34yrs old. Or maybe you can correct me?

Yes she is too old, the maximum age limit is 27. Your only option is for her to find an employer who is willing to apply for a Work Permit for her or to marry her.

Alternatively she could slip over to France for a day and come back in and have her passport stamped for another 6 month, it's technically not supposed to be okay to do that but apparently from what I've read on this board people do it all the time. She won't be able to work but if you're willing to support her then that's no biggie.

But then again.. you take the chance of the immigration control at Dover not letting her back in again

I wonder if those more in the know could confirm whether it's possible for her to stay on the basis of the exisiting relationship, not yet marriage? I think I read something like that on this board a while back (well, in that case there were two lesbians).

How about enrolling her for a University course and let her switch to a student visa? If she's successful in her studies, that would 3-4 more legal years of stay in the UK, plus higher qualification = better employability.

Actually being able to stay until the end of this year would be a bonus. From then our circumstances may have changed ie. Returning with her to Canada.
I like the sound of France for a day but it`s risky. She`d need a ticket to Canada as proof of her `returning`? I checked the Ind site, I can`t just apply for extension?

Why don't you accompany her to France and then try to explain your case to the Immigration officer at port of entry?

If nothing else, you can always apply for an extension while she's here, making sure the application reaches HO before the expiry of her stay, and explain that you'd support her and stuff... To be able to switch from visitor visa to any of the more permanent categories like Work Permit or student normally the person is required to have been oustide the UK anyway.
