Hi,

I'm a workpermit holder. A company in North West England offered a Flash Developer Role. But the salary is only 16K per annum.

If you're in my shoes, will you accept the offer?

Thanks.

I think a the logic is quite simple - if your current salary is less than 16K - choose the new job, if not - say no.

On the other hand, I would be very surprised if the HO gave you a work permit for position with such salary.
IT degree does not automatically guarantee you high salary, actually it does not guarantee anything.

Well the pay is not great however working is better than not working, most employers will be more interested in you if you are already employed than if you are not. Also you can always take it and keep looking for a better job in the mean time.

The IT market will never go back to what it was, ie: over blown salaries and benefits, the past year and a half has basically been an example of that. There are far more qualified IT people now than there were 5 years ago and even 2 years ago therefore salaries and demand have gone down. When the I.T. market comes back it will be like any other area I think in terms of pay and benefits. The glory days are gone so the question is can you afford not to take the job?

I totally agree with Elisa on this one. IT market for years has been overhyped and overblown in terms of salaries. The big boom is now over and employers are more cautious, more demanding in terms of skillsets and not as "generous" salarywise.

If you have a job offer and the employers is willing to apply for WP for you, then I think you shouldn't miss this opportunity. Show 'em how good you're with your IT degree and perhaps they'll soon promote you.

Hi,

What if i know from the grapevine, the boss of the company doesn't value the contribution of IT developer to the company growth.

Well that's a tough question to answer SLL. Is the source of this information a trusted one? What I mean is the person who's giving you this information about the employer a good friend who would be honest with you or is it someone who perhaps is envious or bitter and may be saying that out of spite?

This is the kind of question you can ask during an interview really. Talking to the employer and asking how he sees the position, is it an integral part of the organization? What is the potential for contribution and growth? Those kinds of things.

Also it's possible the person who previously held the job was not very good or motivated therefore now the position is not looked upon favorably. Sometimes it just takes the right person to come in and make the job 'more than it is'.
