Hi Everyone,

Just thought I would let you all know that my HSMP permit was successfully extended today for a further 3 years. While I was always confident that this would be the case as I have a good, senior level job, it is still good news to know that I have made it past this hurdle.

For those who are interested, my extension application consisted of the following:

- 5 page covering letter explaining in detail what I had done in the initial 12 months. While it was perhaps more detail than they needed, it is worth doing to make the decision as easy as possible for them. Set out like a business document, it was broken into many sub-headings and bullet points to help make it easy reading.
- Every pay slip from the last 12 months to substantiate 'economic activity'.
- Supporting letter from the managing director of my firm confirming my position and salary.
- The FLR(O) form plus my current passport.

And that was it. It has been just under a week since I sent the application off and Workpermits UK have sent back all my original documents, a letter confirming that my permit has been extended for 3 years, and my passport with a stamp in it until 2006.

Having a got a good job early on in the initial 12 month visa, the extension should always have been a formality so I am very lucky in that regard. The interesting thing will be how the extension process goes for those who haven't been able to secure a high level position or indeed any position at all. Hopefully the attitude will be one of lenancy for those who have really tried to make use of their initial 12 months.

Best wishes to everyone in your endeavours.
LC1.

Congratulations!!! I knew your app would be successful as you have an extremely good position. I will be surprised if they allow people that have not found work to stay to be honest. Even though the economy is not so good, I think at the HSMP level they expect that you should be successful in finding work. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Congratulations again Loony and all the best to you over in the UK!

LC1,

Congratulations! It's no surprise that you got approval given the detailed documentation you sent.

To answer your earlier question, the job market is extremely difficult right now perhaps because of the uncertainty about the Iraq war. I am trying all avenues including interim work but still getting very few interviews. The executive search market is very slow (almost dead) so I am networking and contacting companies directly, but the probablility of success is very low in each case.

I'm confident that something will happen before my October renewal date, but I would say that the job market is particularly bad at the higher HSMP levels (i.e. over £100k base salary). In my case, I'm assuming the worst case scenario (total inflexibility on the part of HSMP if the renewal applicant is unable to find a job) and therefore open to anything, including short term consulting and downgrading the compensation.

Hi Loonycat, well done. To provide some data points, what is the outline of your job function ie are you a senior manager of some kind and in what field?

Thanks very much Joseph and Bobblewait.

It's not good to hear that things are still so tough in the upper level job search market (I'm a little out of touch these days) but I am sure that something suitable will appear. There seems to be a disconnect somewhere with the difficulties of the job market and the availability of talented individuals as the applicants I received for two positions I have recently recruited for were very dissapointing. They were more mid-level positions but we were expecting a raft of high level candidates to apply but for some reason it didn't happen. And sadly the vast majority of applicants were not currently working.

Bobblewait - I work for a subsidiary for one of the big banks and am head of one of the key departments. I also sit on the executive board. So I am in financial services and am sorry that I am being a bit vague in details but I am kind of protective of my anonymity.

Hope things go well for you both.

Congrats, Loonycat! Thanks for sharing your success. Joseph, it's good to know about the health of the job market over there. I'm sure something will come up for you. Your HSMP came in at the end of the year which is not the ideal time for job-hunting anywhere I imagine--things should pick up as Spring nears.

LC1,

Your observation about the difficulty of hiring good people is very true, even at times like these. I have had the exact same problem when I was recruiting people. The market is very inefficient for both the employer and employee. That's why directly approaching companies makes sense--but you have to approach a lot (hundreds) of them!

Hi Ktdt,

Yes I sent my passport with the application and it was stamped with the extension when returned. And yes, definately send it registerd mail.

Just a week turnaround for mine - I think this is about standard if the app is reasonably straight forward.

I've yet to hear of anyone who has applied for extension without a good job in hand - does anyone know of anyone and if so, what the verdict was?
