Hi,

I got my ILR successfully yesterday. For the benefit of new applicants, here's my story:

BACKGROUND

Came to UK on 12/06/99 on a work permit.
Changed job in 2001.
Current visa valid till 2006.

DOCUMENTS TAKEN
Payslips and bank statements for last 6 months.
Work permit.
Passports.
Council tax statement.
Letter from employer. (format: Mr. X as been employed with us since Y as a Z. His position is considered permanent and pensionable. We have no reason to believe he is other than honest and responsible.)

AT CROYDON
Went there at 3.30 am (sad I know). Was the 5th in queue. At 5 am there were only about 50 people in queue so that would be the time to go. By 7.30 there were about 400.

Went inside the building at 7.45. Handed the papers in at 8.00. No questions were asked. ILR documents and stamped passports were handed back at 8.30.

I was told that the document they gave stating that I have ILR was more important than the stamp on the passport and to keep it in a safe place.

TIPS
Take a flask with a hot drink with you and cover yourself up well as it can get quite cold standing outside the home office. I took a small stool to sit on and some CDs with me to pass the time away.
Go as early as you can. I was too early but 4.30 am to 5 am would give you a good chance of getting same day service for a straight forward case.

Many thanks for all those who've answered my numerous queries on this board in the past.

Mike,

Many congratulations on your attainment of ILR. You should now have no need to go back to Croydon that early .

Thanks Kayalami,

I was a bit worried because the expiry date on my application was 14.05.03 and I thought there'd be loads of people applying at the last minute. Later I found out that the expiry date has been extended to 31.07.03.

Anyway, as you say, I won't have to do it again!

Cheers,
Mikey

I am in kind of same situation, ....

Came to UK on 10/07/99 on a work permit.
Changed job in 04/2001.
Current visa valid till 2005.

As you can see I can apply for ILR after mid June (4 weeks ahead of 4th anniversary) but I was planing to apply in third week of July (after completing 4 years) because my current visa is still valid for 2 more years (like your's) & someone on this forum suggested that its better to go after completing 4 years if you have time left on your visa.
Were any question asked regarding that???
