I wrote 'over 250'....2500 is over to 250 is it not??

Thanx for spotting that....But I had just gont into the office after an hour drive for a journey which is less than 10miles!!!

Be prepared for incredible peak hour traffic jams/congestion in the UK!!...........if it was Africa, I would be driving over the pavements and footpaths - nothing like bus lanes or cycle lanes!!!

Chess,
I am just curious, are you steel in Africa or you moved to the UK already?
If you moved already, did you contact some bank there and succeeded to open local bank account?

Bella_UK.

I am in the UK. already..............North England to a bit 'more' precise.

I did my first degree and my masters degree in the UK!

I have been in and out of UK so many times! on all sorts of Visas....but I am currently on HSMP

In a nutshell I have had a UK bank a/c for a longtime.

Ask any question/suggestion on the banking system..and I may be able to help!

I hope ur curiosity has dissapeared

Chess,
Of course, my curiosity has disappeared; you are familiar with UK lifestyle very well!
About bank system, I have heard from many people, that to open first-time local bank account in the UK for foreigner is a nightmare, and it takes about 3 months.
I also already checked a possibility to use the brunch of Israeli bank, where I have account, but the answer was that they do not provide service for private customers.
Sitibank here also do not give clear answer.
What is the fastest way to open local bank account in the UK bank in case if you do not have signed contract/salary slips for 3 months etc? Is it possible at all?

Bella,

Madan....asked those same questions....try looking back in the forum topics, and then get back if you have any particular specific qn.(I am not good at cross-linking...nil IT skills!!)

One thing for sure is that it can be done without salary slips...you only need a passport and proof of where you are staying.

good luck

Hi Bella,

The easiest way to open a bank account is to have BT bill. Even if you don't have such you can always ask a friend to include your name into his/her bill. BT does that and can send you a new copy of the bill with your name on it straight away. If you have arrived recently in UK it will be very helpful if you can show you previous bank statement with your previous address on it. If you can ask the bank in your home country to issue you a new statement with your new address on it, will be even better.
You can also get a letter from your employer addressed to the bank that you want to open an account stating your address and employment details. (it is even better if your employer introduces you his/her branch)
The truth is that in every branch you inquire they will tell you completely different things so open an account in the bank which seems least demanding in terms of documents. Generally they should be happy with one proof of address and one proof of ID.

good luck

I do not have close friends in the UK, but it is worth trying to find somebody who can do it for me anyway.

Unfortunately for me I have visited the UK as a tourist only.
If everything is OK I am going to come on HSMP status ( I have it already) and I do not have employer or signed contract to submit to the bank.

This is interesting question, I was surprised I can not use London brunch of Israeli bank, where I have account now. Somebody told me they do not deal with “ retail customers”.

Bella,

Just pack your bags and board the next plane to London

There is a 'massive' Israeli/Jewish community in Hendon/Burnt Oak/ Edgware and most of North London!!!....I am sure you wont fail to get a job

On a serious note you need to make up your mind...Canada or UK that is the $64,000 dollar question

Good Luck

Bella,
I've had a few friends who needed international banking access/services; it's not too well developed yet (for a reason or not, I'm not sure). Even with banks that brand themselves as global (HSBC, Citibank) every branch, while prominently displaying their logo and other insignia, in reality (and legally) operates as a separate bank, chartered under the laws of the country (province, states) where they are. In that sense, someone having an account in Citibank-Hong Kong doesn't help Citibank-London, because it's not the same "pocket", and processing funds transfer or any of the accounting aspects will look almost identical to operations with a separate bank.

That said, these banks do offer "international" services and overseas settlement benefits to their "premium" customers. For example, if one has over USD100,000 on deposit with HSBC-New York and plans to relocate to London, they will gladly open an account, and even issue local credit cards in that person's name *in advance* of their arrival to the destination. See here.

Naturally, this scenario wouldn't apply to most of us on this board
