I am non-EU and will be studying in France for one year at a business school, on visa etudiant de long sejour. I will have a two months break in summer.

Normally business school students take up internships during such break. What kind of work permit/additional visa will a non-EU national require?

Hi Cleo

As long as you have a student visa valid through the summer, you should not have to have a work permit to intern at any company. If you are in a full-time paid position, however, this is another story and will most likely need a full work permit. If you have a student visa you should be able to work part time in an internship without a problem.

All the best

Sorry, just clarifying things: internship is PAID TEMPORARY EMPLOYMENT taken by a student during the summer break at a business school, to supplement studies and to provide some work experience in a new field prior to commencing job search and the first 'real' post-MBA job.

From your answer I understood that if it is not permanent employment (=full time?) then no work permit is needed. Can you confirm this?

Many thanks

Hi Cleo

As long as you have a valid student visa for this time and you only work part-time, then a full work permit will probably not be requried. However, there are some internships that would require a work permit, really depending on whether a shortage of French nationals has been established in the field you intend to work. You may wish to check with the French Embassy in your country of residence since a special visa might be in fact needed.
