Some friends and I have recently decided to embark on a bohemian adventure in grape picking in France. Problem is, We have no idea where to start and if we will need work permits. Any help at all will be appreciated.

You will need a work permit if you expect to get paid for picking grapes. However, if you are just doing a tourist thing at a vineyard, then a workpermit is not necessary. I need more details in order to advise more clearly.

We do want to get paid for it. We want to go for about a month, and only to one vineyard.

In that case, you would need a work permit. This would be very difficult as it's in France, who has strict workpermit laws; furthermore, you are asking to get paid for low-skilled work, which work permits are not given out for. I would just suggest doing it as a tourist thing, and not getting paid, since I doubt you will be able to secure a work permit for this. Unless workpermit.com staff can think of a way to get a permit, I don't see how it can be done.

I have been doing some research on the work, and I understand that France is a tough cookie when it comes to work permits, but I have also come across numerous sources that claim a shortage of pickers in the last few years. Do you think this shortage might have any bearing on the chances of obtaining a permit for this kind of work?

It might, but even with worldwide shortage skills such as IT, I heard it is still rather difficult to get a French work permit. Maybe workpermit.com staff can advise better.

I have still been doing research on obtaning a permit for grape picking, but no loop hole or legitimate method of obtaning a permit for migrant worker jobs has presented itself. If anyone has any info about this, it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Special-K

I don't think it would be very easy for you to get a work permit for a grape-picking job in France, unfortunately.

However, if you were able to find an employer who has advertised the vacancy for grape pickers with the ANPE for several weeks and has been unable to fill the positions, then it might be a possibility.

Please let me know if this is the case as then we might be able to help! (e-mail me on france@workpermit.com)

All the best

Elfa
