I want to get job in Ireland. I read Applied Statistics, and also have MBA in Management. How do I get a work permit to work in Ireland.

Hi there,

Well, assuming that you do not have any ties to Ireland(or any other country in the EU)-parents,grandparents,children,spouse that you could get citizenship though, your route would be a work permit.

The way it works is that you have to find a job first, then the employer applies for the permit on your behalf, you cannot apply on your own accord. The employer also pays for the permit (I think that it is 400 Euros now for a 12 month permit). Permits are issued for as little as 1 month or as long as one year, however, after the year, you must get it renewed. The wait for the permit can be long (it took 4 months for mine) and you are not legally allowed to work while you are waiting for the permit. One permit is issued per job, you cannot get a permit for job "A" then switch to job "B" on the same permit, even if it is in the same sector of work. To switch jobs, you must cancel permit #1 and apply for a new one--which could result in another 2-3-4 month wait.

That being said, there is a another alternative to the work permits if you are fortunate enough to choose your career in: IT, nursing, MD, town planning, engineer, architect, surveyor....because Ireland is growing and growing, these jobs in particular are very understaffed, so a "Work Authorization" scheme is set up for those people. I "think" that work auth. are for 2 years and you can move freely from job to job(in the same sector) & are much easier to obtain. I'm not too sure of the rules and regulations regarding this, as I don't qualify--archaeology is not listed

Check out the "Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employent" website and it will give you all the details about work permits/authorizations/citizenship. Good luck! Maria
