I am currently a resident in The Netherlands as a dependent on my husbands residency. Both of us are Australian. I am wondering if the fact that I am here with my husband will help with gaining a work permit, or if there is a way I can get a work permit utilising his residency, or any other options for that matter. So far I have received information that a prospective employer must advertise for 5 weeks within the Netherlands and EU countries before they would even have a chance of proving that I am the one to be employed and hence gain a work permit. Any help at all on this extremely frustrating situation would be greatly appreciated.

HI

The information you have received is true in that an employer would have to prove that there are a shortage of your skills in NL before offering you the job. HOwever, if you have high-level management or IT skills, you might be able to "freelance" by setting up your own business through the local chamber of commerce. Then you could offer your services to employers without having them apply for a standard work permit on your behalf. If you contact me on netherlands@workpermit.com I will send you an article about this you may find useful.

Best regards
