Hi,

I want to work in the Netherlands. I have a South African passport though.

Am I correct in saying that I can really only get a work permit if I have a job to go to there?!

I've visited the country to years ago (on vacation) and loved it. I do have very close family friends there.

1. What if they "sponsor" me to come across; can they do like a letter to say that I will be staying with them and that they will provide me accomodation and other daily neccessities until I can get a job?

I am an IT professional; I'm a business analyst. I have got 4 certificates and 1 diploma behind my name and am currently doing my Information Systems degree.

2. Does this better my chances or help at all?

3. If this does not help, what sites are there where I can view jobs? Ones where there are employers that are willing to sponsor or organise the work permit.

3. Can I apply for a visa although I do not have a job but have accomodation and a "sponsor" (my family friends)?

I think that country is soooo beautiful and still can't get over it (2 years later). Please help me someone.

Thanks
Preyan

Hi Preyan

Yes, you will need a job offer and an employer will need to sponsor you for a work permit before you are able to work in the Netherlands.

As a South African, you will need an MVV (residence permit and travel visa) to stay in the Netherlands for more than three months. This application in and of itself can be time-consuming and complicated and could take several months to process.

1. Your family friends would not be able to "sponsor" you - only an employer could do that

2. Being a highly-skilled IT Professional will help your work permit application as there are certain skills that are "IT Exempt" whereby the employer does not need to make significant local recruitment efforts before offering you an IT position

3. Expatica.com (Netherlands sites) sometimes has job listing

4. You may be able to apply for a Schengen visa that would allow you to reside in the Netherlands for up to three months, but you would not be able to work

Once you have a job offer, we can assist you with the work permit part of the application.

Good luck, and best regards

Elfa

Try http://www.monsterboard.nl http://www.stepstone.nl

for a start. Most agencies crosspost so that will list most of them. The bad news is with the market going south most employers can't be bothered bringing in people from out of country. Many employers are even relunctant to go through the process of just changing over WP's. Again expatica is good for information on this.

Good luck.

A word of caution, I am South African too, took an internal transfer from a multinational in ZA to NL, went through all the motions/red tape etc, moved to NL and now a year later I cannot get my work permit renewed. IT has really gone south as someone else mentioned (I am in IT too). Right now I am planning my move to the UK this coming weekend, the UK is still ok with IT...
