Hi there,
I've just recently come back from vacation to Ireland, and loved it so much, I'm interested now in moving there. I've applied to hundreds of jobs, and no bites yet. I'm thinking of going over there for 3 months and look for work then. People have told me that this is the way to go. Does anyone know if my chances would increase by doing this? Also, if I do find a job there, do I really have to go back to Canada for the work permit to be processed? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

HI there,

I am a Canadian citizen working the Emereld Isle, just got off work actually There are a few rules so sit tight:

First I am assuming that you do not have any ties to the European Union(Parents, grandparents, spouse, children) if you did then you could claim citizenship through them and work free and eazy in any EU country, no permit needed.

If you are like me, then you need a permit. Basically, you need to find a job first then the EMPLOYER applies and pays for the permit for you. Mine took 4 months to process!

You cannot work while you are waiting for the permit to be approved.

Only one permit is given per job. If you want to change jobs, you must cancel the first permit and get a entirely new one (another long wait).

You cannot switch permits from job to job, even in the same field of work.

New regulations came out in 2002 that make it even harder: the employer must now proove that they honestly searched within Ireland and the EU to fill the position before resorting to hiring a non-EU person. They must register with FAS, the Irish employment people and get a specific letter from them to send in with the WP applciation. The fee for a permit has tripled from £125.00 for a year to 400.00 Euros.

Sounds difficult I know, but they do have one program that is a bit easier. It's called 'Work Authorizations'(WA) which is given to people in a field that is particularly understaffed: Engineer, nurse, IT, surveyor, town planner, landscaper. If you fall into this category, then the WA is given for 2 years and you can move from job to job provided it's in the same field. Unfortunately, I don't apply (archaeologist) so I have to get the WP

For full details, check out the 'Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment' the WP/WA people in Dublin. On their website it gives you all that you ever wanted to know about Work Permits & how to get them. Also, they have daily press releases that sometimes pertain to the WP issue, so check that out every couple of days.

Good luck and I'll see you here.

Maria, thanks for the email!! I've checked out that website, as well as thousands of others! What really gets me angry is the fact that all these recruitment agencies in Ireland want to meet with me, but when they find out I need a work permit, they can't help me!!! It's a catch 22!! I haven't given up hope, and I envy you like you wouldn't believe! Come July 31, if I don't find anything this way, I'm going over again for the 3 months and look for work that way. I know it's illegal, but I gotta give it a try. Does anyone have any success stories with doing this risk? Thanks in advance!
