He was told that the British government does not inform the German Government that an application from a German citizen has been made... so theoretically, unless you yourself tell Germany, they wouldn't find out. Apparantly also, there is a loophole clause in the legislation in Germany that does allow a German citizen to take on another citizenship, but it's quite obscure and it's unknown if it would stand up to a full legal challenge in a court case if it came down to that.
