If Germans apply for UK citenzenship, will they lose their German citenzenship? UK allows you to have citenzenships for other countries, what about the German Government? Do they allow it?

a german work colleague of mine just completed the residency requirement in the UK and applied successfully for British citizenship. He was told that the British government does not inform the German Government that an application from a German citizen has been made... so theoretically, unless you yourself tell Germany, they wouldn't find out.

Apparantly also, there is a loophole clause in the legislation in Germany that does allow a German citizen to take on another citizenship, but it's quite obscure and it's unknown if it would stand up to a full legal challenge in a court case if it came down to that.
