The company my husband works for is transferring him to France to work for about 1 or 2 years. How do I become eligible to work in france for the time I'll be living there? I have a degree in electrical engineering and would prefer to stay in that field.

I have exactly the same question. I am an MBA and want to work while my husband is serving his posting for 2 yrs here. I am already residing in France and have a residence permit. Please tell me!

You will both need to find an employer who is willing to sponsor you and then go through the whole full French work permit process. Alternatively, if you are hired by a company outside of France you could get a detache work permit (probably what your spouse's are on) if you worked on a client's site in France. Even though you already have a residence permit you can not work in France unless you find an employer willing to sponsor you for a full French work permit, which is not the easiest to obtain since they will have to show that there are a lack of French/EU nationals available for the job.

Good luck!

Hi Elfa,
Thanks for your reply. I saw on some sites that it is possible to register yourself as a self employed professional. How difficult would it be to get a permit to work as an independent consultant? Easier than a sponsorship? Is there a good possibility of getting one, and hence worth trying? I need to tell you that I am an MBA from a premier international institute and want to take lectures/do project work in mgmt institutes. There are various institutes I have spoken to, who are interested.

Hi Van

I think you are probably referring to a "Carte de Commercant" when you say "self-employed" - this would enable you to work as a businessperson self-employed in France. It is not that easy to obtain, but might be worth a shot. I believe you might have to be outside of France to apply initially, but if you already have a long-stay visa then this might be processed from within France. It usually takes about 6 months though. A good site to read about the requirements for a Carte de Commercant is the French Embassy in Washington DC's website, the URL to this section is: http://www.consulfrance-washington.org/visas/visasen.htm#13 or try http://www.diplomatie.gouv.fr/venir/visas/doc.asp?doc=33&langue=anglais&PaysPostes=63

Hope this helps!
