I currently have a NZ passport with UK Right of Abode stamp. My question is whether this allows me to work in the EEA without the need for a work permit?

The freedom of movement across the EEA applies only to EEA citizens (and their dependants).

Theoretically a Right of Abode stamp provides citizenship in the UK which is part of the EEA so you would think it counts. It annoys me that my mother was born in the UK yet this does not seem to mean much. If I had an Irish grandparent then qualifying for freedom of movement in the EEA is not a problem! Likewise if my father was born in the UK then the same goes. What can I say?

You can become a UK citizen through the right of abode, then you'd be entitled to free movement in the EEA. See http://www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk/default.asp?pageID=141
