Hello Marcis, hello ladies and gentlemen!

Does anybody know, whether or not had the president of Germany signed the new immigration law?
If not, when it is expected to be signed?

Thank you.

Hi,

He has not yet signed it, and I dunno about the chances whether he might sign it soon. Haven't heard anything about that lately.

Last I heard was that the President will sign it after the elections in September to see whether CDU or SPD is elected. CDU being in favour of the bill and SPD not.

This article from BBC Online contains the full details on the law. In short, it has been passed and signed; however, the opposition vows to overturn it if it wins the election this September.

Herman is right, the bill has been passed and signed. However, it will only come into force on 1 January 2003. Between now and 1 Jan, there is the General Election, and the major oppostion party CDU has vowed to overturn the law if they win. However, their preferred coalition partner, the FDP, has clearly said they support the bill. Thus, chances are that the bill might enter into force on 1 January next year in an unchanged or slightly changed format.

You can read a summary of the practical consequences of the new bill for potential immigrants in the news section of this website:

(The BBC is article is very good, but it stresses more on politics.)
