I am working in the UK. It seems that Ireland is a very sought-after destination these days. I have travelled to Ireland several times and found it rather infra-developed in comparison with the UK or the north of Europe, and non-irish residents were few and far between. So what is the appeal?

Sus,

I don't get it either. I also spent several weeks travelling throughout Ireland this spring and I was quite disappointed. I think everyone had heard about the "celtic tiger" economy and the media coverage that accompanied it made it seem like it was so happening over there but when you actually go there and see the reality it is quite different.

Don't get me wrong, it's a lovely country and the people are quite nice however it was not what I saw being portrayed in the media. The so called celtic tiger days seem to be over and you are right there is not alot of ethnic diversity amongst the population.

My only guess is that perhaps the people who can not gain entry to the UK might be looking at Ireland as a gateway over. Or perhaps they are looking for an escape from the hectic pace of London and would like a simpler life.

As an avid backpacker I did enjoy the country side and I have to say that it is a photographers paradise out there however if you are career oriented then the UK would definitely be a more favorable choice.

mainly you are both right about the diversity, but if you think the amount of IT companies(especially multinationals - IBM, Sun,Microsoft, Oracle, Symantec etc) it makes sense that is a favorite destination for it pros.

In my oppinion from this point of view you cannot compare it with any other european country. Also keep in mind that the companies I mentioned have established here European HQ(some of them also R&D Centre with 100s of employees)

Fair enough the infracture and the public service are not on the same level as in the nordic countries/uk, and the celtic tiger is more like a celtic cat, but believe me that IT is big in Ireland, and that's makes it worth coming here for jobs.

I think the fact that you get(or you used to get) so many opportunities and the easinees to get work-permit is what made people came here.
