I am an IT graduate, and I live in the U.S. currently. Could I go to a German consulate to apply for a German Green Card. Will it also help my chances of receiving a German Green Card, if I can speak German fluently? Just to add that, My grandfather is a German citizen, and served in the Bundeswehr(military), but the problem is that he passed away 2 yrs ago. Can they pull any records of my Grandfather to help me with my situation.

To get a GC, you first have to have a job in Germany because those who will apply for the GC will be the company hiring you and not yourself.

You should contact directly a company, and in case they are willing to employ you, they could give you a contract that you would show in your embassy (if you are not in Germany at the moment) so you could have a visa allowing you to come over here and get your 5 years residence permit but in the meantime, contact someone in the city where the company is so he/she could go to the Arbeitsamt of that city to get you your work permit, essential for getting a GC (what I did for my first job).
In case you already are in Germany, get a contract from them and present it to the Arbeitsamt of the city where the company is and you will get a work permit (what I did for my second work).

Hi, Alex!

I just registered here to help you if you are still interested to go to Germany.
I can't help you about your work permit, but...
If you are a descendent of a german, and you speak german (mainly it means you keep your german traditions and culture) you have the right to "zuruckkehren" (return) to Germany. However you can obtain a german citizenship in just a few months. So you don't need workpermit in Germany and anywhere and anymore in the better part of Europe.
It doesn't bother your american citizenship, because both country recognize the so called "dual citizenship" status.
If your grandfather was a german citizen and you have all the papers about his citizenship and military record it couldn't be hard to do all the paperwork.
Ask the german Embassy in US!
"Viel gluck"

ps.: if you have any question, just ask me! jan-tsi@freemail.hu
