I'm wondering what's required to recieve a long term visa for France? And how long can this visa last? Also, can you renew the visa (assuming it's not for an unlimited amount of time) also.. Can you be in the country when applying for a work permit (assuming you already have a long term visa.

Here's the situation..

My girlfriend of 4 years is a French national, I'm an American. She has been living and working here in the US (she has a green card). We both reciently lost our jobs and would like to move to France. I have lots of stock options that I have to cash out (plus nine months of severance) so I'm set for money for several years.. and she will be finding a job. I plan on enrolling in French lessions and eventually would like to find a job.

I read that you need to apply for the long term visa from the US, which is fine, I'm just wondering about the rest.

Any help would be great.

Thanks!

The most accurate advice would be from a French consulate/embassy in the USA. A search on google.com should turn up their website.
