The European Parliament has adopted the proposals on freedom of movement for EU citizens and third country nationals (TCNs) but extended the deadline for application of the Directive to July 1, 2004, instead of 2003.

Among the proposals approved:

The concept of 'family' to be widened to include spouses of the same sex, and registered and unmarried partners, irrespective of sex.

Ease third-country nationals' access to EU territory for the purpose of employment or self-employment.

Establish a criteria to test that a vacant position cannot be filled with an EU national, to justify TCNs applying for jobs in the Union.

Speeding up the process of granting work permits and making them easier to renew.

So one should be permanent resident and not only for example, granted residence for 5 years or so...

Hi,
my question is: from July 1st, 2004, will same sex partners (who are married in a country like Germany) be able to join the partner if moving to the UK for example? I mean, I am married with another man, and in the law now we cannot move to the UK, but will it be allowed with this new law?
On July 1st 2004 they will decide it or will the law start from this day?

And I also heard that they will be laws giving the same rights to Long term residents in Europe. When will it be valid?

Best regards,

Glauco

You can already move to the UK under the current law. You just have to prove that you have been in a relationship for more than two years.

From 2004 on you and your partner can move to any EEA country regardless of their national laws.
