If you remember , I posted an enquiry here about getting German citizenship through ancestry.

Just to let you know that it is possible. However you have to demonstrate your knowledge in German and German history.

Alas, my German is poor so this route is irrelevant to me.

Would language instruction redress this or is it not practical in your desired time frame for attainment of German Citizenship. If you are a British Citizen you can always reside/work in Germany until you have acquired the appropriate fluency of language. Just out of curiosity what advantages would GC confer over current EU member states citizenship apart from the standard holding political office and somewhat better visa free travel (esp US) relative to say Greece etc?

Kay,

I have long realised that my language skills are poor. It would take me ages to grasp German.

I did not come to the UK from eastern Europe but from South America. In any case I don't believe the EU concept as we know it is going to last for long. It is to big and bureaucratic to maintain and sustain.

Your SA routes lean me towards your ability to speak Spanish and or Portugues with a possibility of French. Pity that German is not from the same latin base..you would have picked it up in a flash..I enjoy watching my continental colleagues interchange between portuguese, spanish and italian. Ditto EU/ EEA situation - as ot grows bigger it becomes more difficult to manage especially as individaul meber states fight for their veto powers on politically hot subjects...defense, currency and of course immigration.

Thorsten, can I ask where your information about having to demonstrate knowledge in German and German History came from?

I've been looking (very half-heartedly) into German citizenship through ancestry... I spoke to someone in the German embassy about this, and he didn't mention the need for German knowledge at all!
