Elfa,

My partner and I are hoping to be able to go to Aus early next year to work within architecture or interior/architectural design, hopefully in Sydney, for a year. We are both RIBA Part II qualified since June this year but not fully qualified as architects. We have completed 5 years training and a one year work experience placement.
My partner will be 35 next March, whereas I will be 26 and able to apply for a working holiday visa (I hope).
He will be looking to get employer sponsorship, but we don't know how long this could take or quite how to go about getting the ball rolling.
Could you give us a starting point on where to begin looking for architectural design work and whether you think there wcould be many opportunities for us, and advise us on how long to expect the visa processing to take.

That would be a great help,

Thanks,

Cruising.

Hi Cruising

Unfortunately, I am not an expert on architectural design and would advise you to go about the process of finding sponsorship in Australia in the same way as any other individual might go about doing it. You could either begin the search from the UK and post your CV on OZ job search websites (to name a few: http://www.careerone.com.au http://www.seek.com.au http://www.jobnet.com.au) and see what you get, OR your partner could travel to Australia on a tourist visa and try to secure sponsorship in person, interviewing with potential firms and seeing if they might be willing to sponsor. However, the Australian employer will most likely need to prove to DIMA that there are a lack of architectural desginers in Australia before he could actually hire your partner. This might involve advertising in local papers for several weeks prior to offering your partner a job. In many cases, it is a chicken or egg situation as Australian employers won't consider job applicants if they don't have a "work permit" and one can't get a "work permit" without having a job offer and employer sponsorship.

It might be worth considering permanent residency in Australia, whereby your partner might qualify to migrate on the basis of his skills and qualifications. Please be advised that if you are interested in an initial assessment on
immigration to Australia, you should complete our Immigration Appraisal Form
available on our website at http://www.workpermit.co.uk/australia/appraisal_form.htm.
If you have a CV on hand it may be more convenient for you to provide much of
the information in CV format (in Rich Text (*.rtf) or Plain Text (*.txt) Format,
please) and send this to me at australian@workpermit.com in addition to filling out the on-line form.
As soon as we receive the above-mentioned details, you will be provided a complete
initial assessment on your ability to migrate to Australia.

I hope this helps!
