My family and I are thinking about starting a business in Auckland. I am wondering about about racism towards immigrants and non-white people. I understand that there is prejudice in any place. But I'm wondering if it is a visible problem in the country. I am not trying to start a debate or cause problems. But if I move to New Zealand, it will be permanent and I don't want to be there being treated terribly.

I currently live in the U.S. and it has its own share of problems in terms of race relations. But I don't want to spend thousands of dollars and leave behind almost eveything and everyone I know and love to wind up in a simialar or worse situation.

Your answers or personal experience is greatly appreciated. I really want to go to New Zealand. But I have already lived in Europe so I will open my business there if NZ proves to be more trouble than it's worth.

Hello Moongirl,
From what I have heard from experiences of others, New Zealanders are the most immigrant friendly and hospitable people. It shouldn't be a problem for you.But then again this is not my first hand experience as I have never been to NZ.Good luck to you.

All said and done ..isnt it best to settle down in one's own country ..

Working all over the world making money , getting experience ....all that makes sense...but really people..especially us people from developing countries SHOULD start thinking more seriously of settling back in our own countries...

If one has what it takes to be succesful , he/she will find it easy going and a very high quality of life whther US or Europe or some other planet..

Notice that you will very rarely find people from developed world trying to settle down permanently in another country no matter how good a life and living standard there...

Thanks for the replies. I have also heard that New Zealand has very friendly people. But I wanted to be sure and see what others thought or have heard. Of course, I plan on going there before making any decisions so that I may see for myself what the place is like. I'm not just talking about race relations as there as many things to consider when deciding to make a move such as this.

And you have a good point, Asn. As an American it would be much easier to stay here in the U.S. But it's not everyday that one has an opportunity to do something like this. It is possible that no matter where I go I will be back in the States at some point. But I don't want to look back and have regrets. I have lived abroad twice - once in Europe and once in Asia. Both were difficult in certain ways but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

If you experience any racial discrimination in New Zealand it would almost certainly be a rare occurance. Kiwi's are amongst the most racially tolerant (and friendly) people in the world and I'd presume they'll welcome you with open arms there.
