Hi

I'd like information regarding the processing time for Canadian PR at buffalo, USA for skilled immigrant with no prior job offer and for a single? I think my application would be a straight forward application with all education and work experience credentials from USA.

I'm hearing 10 months as well as 2 years. Why so much difference?

I applied Feb 2003 and heard back from them last week. They sent papers for the medical exam, and request for FBI police check. No mention of assessment, or interview waiver - I am assuming the assessment was positive and the interview was waived. So 1+ year, going by my experience.

1. The reduction of the points for the skilled class from 75 to 67 has resulted in a significant increase in the number of applications.

2. The US is unique in that many non nationals apply from there for Canadian PR primarily due to the high H1B numbers in the US who go for Can PR as an insurance policy - consequently it has the highest backlogs in the western hemisphere. Expect these to grow with the advent of a decreased H1B Cap.

3. The new IRPA requires the applicant to meet the points criteria on the day of decision making. General consensus is that the points are bound to be revised upwards especially after the backlogs of the retroactice case law/ rulings are processed. If you are borderline work on maximising your points. I don't know how many points you got but the current matrix wasn't too geared towards single applicants

4. The holding of US qualifications and work experience are not in themselves indicators of a straightforward case - there are medical and security checks to be done. The security/ background checks typically delay processing especially where you are a national of one of those countries deemed to be close bedfellows with terrorists for want of a better expression or have resided in such.

5. Expect processing times to range from 8 mths to 2 years or longer where an interview is required and must be scheduled for officer availability which is another reason for the variation of processing times. (Note that the sub 12 mths marks tends to be for spouses and children of Canadian Citizens and PR's).

6. Your interview will be held at a Canadian consulate in the US - its best to say that you are willing to go to any. If you will need a US Visa to enter the US in future you must note that you cannot be granted such to attend the interview but must meet the normal merits of obtaining a non immigrant visa. Files can no longer be transferred where an applicant fails to obtain a US visa.

Good Luck

In the past I have also inquired with Canadian consulates via e-mail re: processing times for this class, and was given the same timeframe 8 mo to 2 yr; I imagine it can get even longer for various spontaneous reasons, but hardly shorter... One of the turn-offs for me if I ever consider applying elsewhere outside U.S.
