Please help me with my case. I am 19 years old and I am studying in India . My Parents live in Denver. I've come to visit my parents in US for the vacations.

I read about the OCI problems people were facing hence I contacted FRRO Hyderabad and they told me to apply for a new OCI card I did the same but my application is still in process , before leaving for the US I emailed FRRO Hyderabad regarding the same they told me to carry Old Passport , New Passport , OCI and acknowledgment slip stating my application is in process. Before leaving from Delhi I confirmed the same at the Immigration office.

Now after reading so many cases of denied Boarding I am confused as to what I should do at this point.I have a residence proof (Aadhar Card) and all other documents stating I reside in India including a Bonafide Certficate from my college.I am flying Lufthansa from Denver on the 1st of Jan .

What should I do at this point? Should I apply for an e-visa ?(I reside in India hence I'm confused about that ). I am really confused right now .
Apply for an evisa is my advice. If asked by the airline show it. Do not follow the advice of anyone in india.
That advice is only of use once you land in india.

Unless they update the rules on Timatic web the airline may refuse checkin .

You might get lucky and the check in agent might miss the note but it's not worth the risk.

If possible please report if airline specifically asked for evisa even after seeing the OCI.

Will help in gathering data for the benefit of other passengers.

Saw the news today . The government seems to have given a temporary relief till July 30th . They have issued an office memorandum regarding the same , a couple of new websites have also covered the same.
Hope the airlines are notified soon.If anyone is travelling in the near future please post your experience regarding the same.

ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) Validity is 30 days from the issue date. e-Tourist Visa Validity period is 30 days from the date of first arrival in India. It is written in red text on ETA. Don't see an option to attach file here. Take a look at Personal Details removed.

In simple terms

For the 30 day e-visa you need to ARRIVE in india before the 30 day period is over and once you reach India you are give 30 days to stay.

The clock starts ticking from the time of application usually.

This basically means that you should.not apply for the 30 day visa too early as it may not be valid at your time of arrival into India.

It seems confusing but remember that the evisa is not really a visa it's an electronic travel authorisation allowing you to travel to india..You carry it with you and the actual visa is stamped on your passport on your arrival in India.

With 30 day evisa what they actually give is an electronic authorisation to board a flight arriving into India for the next 30 days

Checked in this morning for my boy from Heathrow to Bangalore with Air India. No issues as long as you have old passport.
I would aim to fly Air India as very clear on their website and flexible.
Make in India, Fly Air India.

It's not as simple as that. Even air India outsourced check in to other agencies in many airports. They have the final say .

So just flying air India is not without risk until the government notification has been clearly communicated to all agencies..

What the news seems to say is that it is an internal office memo. These sort of memo's aren't released to the public , the only way would've be to clarify with the embassy and ask them to confirm on the news. Although a lot of local WhatsApp channels are sharing photographs of the memo

I sympathize with those that were denied boarding before this memo came out. I do have some choice words for the officials that literally hurt these people. Interesting part is that Immigration had no issue with this, just airlines (ostensibly on the orders of the govt)

We should strongly campaign to make the OCI a lifelong document that does not require renewal, as long as you have old/new passport.

Details of the OCI not needing to be re-issued on a renewal passport is on the MEA External Affairs - Govt of India website.

Website link is mea.gov.in/press-release.htm?dtl/32222/press+release+on+relaxation+in+oci+guidelines+till+30th+june+2020

Or search Twitter for “guruatds/status1207403233502580738. This tweet will have a link to the MEA website.

You never know they might even change their minds to say no re-issue of OCI is required at all now provided you carry all old passports. I can certainly dream this anyway!!

The frustrating thing is they change their minds so often - had the 5 year evisa been around for $80 when I first got my and my family members OCIs I would never have bothered getting it. The process to get the original and renewal is ridiculous.

On the re-issue of OCI surely they can simplify it so all you need to do is send in your passport and old OCI rather than all the documents as they should have copies of these already when OCI first applied for.

And their website for applications is dreadful!!!

Totally agree with every word you have written! OCI is lifelong so why indeed does it need to be reissued is specially if you have old/new passport as you say. Money making scam!

Clearly says U visa not required if you have valid Oci card with foreign passport ( except pak & bgld).
Why this is not followed and confusion ??
Because the indian government created these rules which are now on TIMATICWEB.

As I said this is the database that checkin agents use.

You can check it for yourself as some airlines allow you to access this

For example

See

https://www.koreanair.com/global/en/tra ... imaticweb/

And upload your details

In OCI it says that OCI has to be renewed with each new passport till the age of 20.

The actual wording is

Important:
Passengers who are 20 years and younger must apply for a new OCI card every time they get a new passport.
Passengers who are 21 and younger than 50 years are not required to apply for a new OCI card when they get a new passport. They can present the OCI card with a valid passport.
Passengers older than 50 years must apply for a new OCI on the first renewal of the passport after 50 years. If the OCI card is issued for the first time after the passenger is older than 50 years, there is no need to issue a new OCI every time a new passport is issued.

These are actual OCI rules which India itself does not follow :D
I still have not heard of anyone not allowed in as OCi had not been renewed..

It's the airline which is finding it difficult to board passengers( they can get heavy fines if they allow passengers to fly without following the rules ) and unless Indian government changes the rules an evisa is the safest option .

Timatic web has updated the OCI guidelines

Effective from 31 March 2020, passengers with a Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) Card will not be allowed to enter. They must change their PIO status to Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) status before 31 March 2020.

Passengers with an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card younger than 21 years must have both passports when the passport number in the OCI card does not match the one in the valid passport.

Passengers with an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card 50 years or older must have both passports when the passport number in the OCI card does not match the one in the valid passport.
