I recently got married in Egypt. It was quick and painless. I arrived in Egypt on the Saturday, started proceedings on the Sunday and was married by 3.30pm on the Monday
Firstly, I made an appointment at the British Embassy in Cairo (online), for 11am on the Sunday morning, to make (sign) a marriage declaration – I did this about 3 months head of arriving in Cairo.
When in Cairo I attended the appointment with my husband, he was asked for his ID card as proof of identity. I was asked for my divorce paper and passport. I did have my birth certificate but wasn’t asked for it. The fee for this declaration which is made up of English and Arabic was approx. £120. I read over it and signed it.
We got medical certificates at a local clinic, this process took about 10 minutes, doctor asked a few questions and asked us to sign / thumb print. Unsure of the cost, but no expensive.
Next we went to a place where I was given 1 month residency in my passport (I don’t know what this place was called – sorry).
We then took our paperwork to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Mohandessin, Giza for more stamps, this didn’t cost much (sorry I can’t be more specific as my husband dealt with the cost).
On the Monday we went to the Notary Publics Office @ MOJ Annex, with all our paperwork, passport sized photographs (we had 12 each – not sure how many were used) and a family rights stamp (which I think my husband said was about 50p in the post office), armed with our 2 male witnesses (BIL and husbands friend) and my MIL – we got married. We were given our marriage certificate there and then (2 copies).
The following day we visited an English speaking lawyer on the supplied list by the British Embassy in Cairo, he took 1 copy of our marriage certificate and £50 to translate into English with all the correct stamps from the official translation department. He took 4 working days to complete this.
Hope some of this information may help.
