Re: Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI)

Post by mistrk29 » Tue Mar 19, 2024 3:06 pm

Hi!

We have tried contacting the UK Home Office and the National Archives, unfortunately both departments are not able to assist with this. As a last ditch attempt we have called on the support of our local MP who is in the process of writing to the Home Office to determine whether this would be possible.

Asides from this it seems the OCI application has come to halt, until we make a trip to India to try and get this Nativity Certificate

Thanks for the help so far.

You can try this to contact UK Home Office: https://www.gov.uk/contact-ukvi-inside-outside-uk

If this doesn't work, try seeking help from your local MP as they have a direct contact within the Home Office, or try citizens advice. I know its a long shot but don't see any other option.

Regarding the Nativity Certificate, sorry, I don't have any experience/understanding about that.

HCI Birmingham website says, quite a few options to prove the Nativity (https://cgibirmingham.gov.in/page/display/43). If you are able to prove nativity for your mother, that might be enough to prove your Indian roots.

Let us know, how you get on with any of these.

Good luck!

Hi!

Thank you for your reply! Currently no one in the family holds an OCI card. HCI advised to get a nativity certificate but there doesn’t seem to be much support online how to get one of these. Do you have any advice for this please or how to contact home office to get the Indian passport copy?

Thank you very much for your help

Sorry, completely forgot while writing the response that your mother doesn't have her last Indian Passport.

Here is the updated response:

Don't think just Indian birth certificate would be enough as that's most probably doesn't establish your Indian roots. I assume none of your parents has an OCI either?

Maybe you can try asking UK home office if you can get a copy of your mother's last Indian passport, once you have one passport, HCI should be able to track all her passports.

If the above doesn't work, try going to a HCI camp (usually organised in summer, information available on HCI website) and ask about this to the HCI employees, they are usually very helpful.

Keep us informed, as this is a unique issue and surely would help others.

Comprehensive documents list is available here: https://www.hcilondon.gov.in/docs/16372 ... 112021.pdf

Good luck!

Hi, all!

Need advice for OCI application based on my mother being the root Indian.

We are struggling with the documents needed to prove Indian origin.

We have:
Birth Certificate from India
Marriage Certificate from India

We do not have her Indian Passport or Surrender Certificate. She has naturalised since 1970s and is a British citizen now.

Are we able to apply using the Birth Certificate from India as proof? Does this need to notarised and if so, how do we go about doing this?

HCI informed us that getting a Nativity Certificate would be helpful but the application ask things such as 'name of vessel on which applicant emigrated from India' which was in the 1960s and so long forgotten/lost.

If anyone has advice it would be really helpful regarding next steps or experience of applying for nativity certificate.

No problem!

Is it not possible to get the nativity certificate from within the UK?

Hello,

Question on OCI application:
What are the original documents taken as part of the application and when are they returned?

I have the OCI appointment on 22nd March but I have EU travel on 29th March, hence confirming.

Thanks

They would keep the surrender and renunciation certificate, I think for some people they also kept the naturalisation certificate, the docs are usually returned within 5-7 working days.

They won't keep your British Passport, hence you would have no issues in travelling to EU.

Hi,

I have a query and would be great to get guidance from this group.

My wife got her OCI last week and we noticed that her signature is not right, they have given someone else’s signature instead of hers. We have already emailed and chased VFS and HCI with the OCI scanned copy and the application copy. Reason for attaching application copy was because it had the correct signature during our submission.

Can I get some guidance on how to go about and whom to contact?

Thanks
Hari

Hi All,

Can someone tell me where you are tracking the RC status?

I had submitted the online form, made an appointment at VFS Goswell and submitted all hard copies and received a receipt on 20th March.
When I now check the status (7th April) at https://indiancitizenshiponline.nic.in/Renounce , the site basically tells me to go submit the documents.

I'm confused. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
many thanks!

Hi Rlobo,

That's quite normal, rest assured, you are looking at the correct website. The site normally takes days, sometimes weeks to update the current status of your application. Give it may be few more days and check again. I wouldn't be surprised if its still the same as now.

Very much appreciate the reassurance, @RonV! Huge relief that I don't have to re-do everything for RC.

After I receive my British passport, can I travel to India with eVisa without surrendering or renouncing/OCI?

hi all, a quick question - when submitting the OCI application, did the VFS guys take your original surrender certificate? or just the copy of the surrender certificate?

VFS wanted originals of the surrender certificate, renunciation certificate, nationality certificate and cancelled Indian Passport. Make sure you take them all. They get sent to the High Commission who return them by courier in about 2 weeks' time. There is no end to the ridiculous Indian bureaucracy.

Hi All,

Can I ask if it's possible to apply for OCI and/or Renunciation Certificate whilst in India on tourist visa?

Thanks,
