Hi All,

I am preparing to renounce my Indian citizenship. Please can you confirm what are the documents need to be uploaded because the portal asks to upload only Indian passport and Address proof and other documents are optional.

Thanks,
Sathya

Find below the required documents as per the VFS Renunciation Checklist.

Please provide self-attested photocopies of the documents mentioned below.

1. Appointment letter confirmation.

2. Online application form [MHA form]

3. Photograph 2”x2”

4. Photocopies of front and back page of the latest and all previously available Indian passports.

5. Naturalisation certificate.

6. Current Passport.

7. UK Address Proof

Make sure you upload everything, or else you can pay £15 and ask the VFS agent to upload it on your behalf . But please do carry a self attested copy of all these documents for submission.

Hi RonV,

Thanks for your response. The MHA portal form accepts only passport and address proof.
How do you upload all other documents?

Thanks,
Sathya

Its been more than 3 months since my application, but if I remember correctly I made the all the passports (including the current UK one) and Naturalization certificate as one pdf.

Good it was finally approved , I am also waiting, although the status on the website still shows me that I need to submit my documents. Even though my appointment was done over 3 weeks ago.

Also, I have not received my SC either in over 3 weeks. So you are lucky you got it in 5 days.

I have a question about filling out a renunciation form online.

It has a mandatory field of Surname, while as many of us are struggling, I don't have a Surname! Wondering what I do to fill out the form and submit it? I cannot use 'spaces' or any other characters either! Any help is highly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi, one of my friend is facing a similar issue but its not his surname that's missing, instead its his mothers surname. He asked this question to the VFS officer during his Surrender Certificate appointment and he was told to make the application by opting for the VFS Consular Service, this way the VFS agents fill the form and they have a way around it some how. Not too sure, will update once he has completed his appointment.

I applied for renunciation of citizenship at VFS Goswell on 29th January 2024. Till today the online status on the MHA website is showing as 'Received'. Looks like the 60 days timeline given by VFS is not correct.

Incidentally the passport surrender certificate took about 3 weeks to come, even though they said that it takes a week.

Too many cases? The Home Office is processing nationality applications really quickly these days!

Hi,

Thanks a lot for your post here. Can you please help me with the point of document upload. I forgot to upload one of the document and unable to load it and VFS said that they don't upload it. Can VFS consulate or VFS upload the document for me?

Guys,

Can please anyone help me? I forgot to upload the cancelled previous Indian passport in the renunciation application and now it is not allowing to upload me any more document. Can anyone of you visiting the consulate or the VFS ask, if we have forgotten to upload any document, can the VFS or Consulate take money and upload it? If anyone can do me favour, it will be a great help.

Hi sathyauk,

Thanks a lot for your response. I called up and went to VFS. They said, we cannot upload any document on your behalf. You can come and submit the hard copies only. Anyways, I will wait for the appointment date and confirm to the group on how it went.

OCI processing timelines

Post by DebOnline » Sat Apr 27, 2024 10:35 pm

End to end timeline from Surrender Certificate to receipt of OCI: 3 months 20 days

British Naturalisation Ceremony: 20/12/2023
British Passport Received: 28/12/2023

@VFS Birmingham
Surrender Certificate applied: 06/01/2024
Surrender Certificate processed: 08/01/2024
Surrender Certificate received: 09/01/2024

@VFS Goswell, London
Renunciation Certificate applied: 23/01/2024
OCI Application submitted : 06/02/2024 (with renunciation payment receipt)
Renunciation Certificate issued: 16/04/2024
Renunciation Certificate received: 22/04/2024
Renunciation Certificate emailed to VFS: 22/04/2024
OCI Printing Status ‘Processed’: 24/04/2024
OCI received: 26/04/2024

Top tips:
1. Applying for Renunciation and OCI one after the other did help me in saving time although I was advised otherwise by VFS officer who suggested I should wait for RC to arrive and then apply for OCI.
2. Submission at London Goswell saved me an extra visit for High Commission Officer’s signature during renunciation.
3. I used the VFS paid services - Digital Document Check and Form Filling which saved all aprehensions of potential rejection due to technical submission errors. Charges are very reasonable compared to private vendors available in the market.

Trust this helps.

Hi thank you for sharing your timeline. Could you please advise which email id to send renunciation certificate to for OCI processing. Is it a vfs or HCI/CGI email id. Thank you
