Post by TintinHerge » Wed May 22, 2013 3:49 pm

Do I have to take an appointment with VFS London to submit my application for surrendering Indian passport? Or can I just walk in?

Thanks in advance

My timelines at VFS (Goswell Road, London):
Submitted Passports in person on: 21/May
Status updated on web-site: 24/May
Revoked Passports and Surrender certificate collected: 24/May

Very pleased with efficient service. I walked in without any appointment and didn't have to wait more than 10-15 minutes. Passport collection process was also smooth and straightforward. Good luck, everyone.

Hi,
Apologies for repeating the question that has already been asked by many before but I am a bit confused as some people have contradicted on this matter..

Will the Indian High commission return the cancelled Indian passport after surrendering it?
If so, will it be sent along with the Surrender certificate?

I have read through the related links at the HCI webpage but there doesn't seem to be any indication which says that the cancelled passport will be returned/sent back...

I'll appreciate feedback/advice from those that have surrendered their passports recently in 2013 as there seems to be contradicting advice in the earlier posts..

Thanks again for your time.

Post by eashkuma4 » Sun May 26, 2013 6:30 pm

Dear All,

I have one strange question, if either of the parent renounciate Indian nationality will child automatically loose thier Indian citizenship?

I applied recently for british nationality and took british passport and have sent my Indian passport for surrender however, my son is born in the UK and we took indian passport, i am now wondering if he will loose his indian nationality because of my surrender application?
many thanks in advance for reply

Post by shabanaimrank » Thu May 30, 2013 6:39 am

Hi,

I am about to surrender my Indian Passport today via post to

India Visa Application Centre
1-3, Canalside,
Uxbridge Road
Hayes, Middlesex, UB4 0JN

- Is it the correct address ?
- How shall I pay postal order or debit card?
If I pay by card how can I do so as the form does not have any section to fill in payment details?

Please suggest

As per section 8(2) of Indian Citizenship Act, if a person renounces his citizenship, then every minor child of that person will also cease to be citizen of india.

I called HCI and they clarified that Child wouldnt loose the citizenship given one parent renounciates it.

I see this as correct, because child is eligible for Indian nationality if either parents are Indians at the time of Birth

Child is eligible for indian citizenship if either parent is indian at the time of birth is different from parent renouncing indian citizenship after a child has acquired indian citizenship.

I tend to agree with you but have you asked HCI interpretation of Section 8 subsection (2)?
It's not explicit in 8(2) whether its both parents or either parent.

I have emailed VFS and they have told the same Child don't need to give up until he holds passport of another country.

Looks very confusing, any way I read on the forum some of them renewed Indian Passport for child where one parent is British

VFS are mere agency only and not same as HCI. Their opinon is not binding.

I leave it up to you to read section 8.2 from the official link that I posted above and make your interpretation and/or seek professional confirmation.

surrender certificate timeline

Post by KKumar » Tue Jun 04, 2013 8:27 am

Hi,

I did apply for naturalisation for me and my wife and MN1 for my son. received an approval on 2nd May 2013. immediately i called Leeds Office for citizenship ceremony and received date 25th July, 2013. because that was only nearest date available. we all three have Indian Passport at moment having ILR stamped. Now some reason, my son need to travel to India on 4th July,2013 and would retun on 10th Sept,2013.

I understand i need to surrender my son's Indian Passport within 3 month from date of naturalisation. and i will need British Passport at the time of surrender Indian Passport. so would need around 3 weeks to process it.

1. what is date of naturalisation? is it date or approval (4th May) or ceremony date (25th July)?

2. Can i apply for surrender certificate on his return means after 10th Sept,2013 without any fine means using grace period of 3 months?

3. I understand child does not need to attend ceremony but is it ok if child is out of at the time of ceremony?

4. can i delay Citizenship ceremony by requesting i cannot attend ceremony on 25th July so chances next date i will get will be in sept 2013. so i get time. here only contradiction is approval letter says we need to attend ceremony within 90 days of approval date.

Please let me know if i need to move this question to different thread as it does have combination of questions.

Thanks,
KKumar

Surrender

Post by eashkuma4 » Tue Jun 04, 2013 10:51 am

Hi,

Please see answers below

1. The date you get on certificate is the date you attend the ceremony and take oath and sign in the register, the registrar who asks you take oath will write with pen on that certificate, so this is not printed on the certificate

2. Yes, you have 3 months grace period for travel, you can apply that.

3. Yes child dont attend

4. You can call them and say you cannot make out 25 July and ask for next date, they will give some date and it is still considered, it only gets sent back to HO is when you dont take any action of collecting it or communicating to the local council despite they sent you a letter

Have you received any update from VFS Manchester ? I applied on 21st May and the last message i got was on 29th may that this is with HCI. Not heard anything since then. I was told it takes 2 week and I am in middle of third week with no update since long.

VFS Edinburgh timelines

Post by sonuijs » Fri Jun 07, 2013 1:56 pm

I surrendered my passport at VFS Edinburgh almost a month back but till yet haven't got anything back. Looking at the earlier post all those people who have submitted their application in any of the VFS around London or through Post are getting their certificates within a week. Seems like CGI Edinburgh is really really slow in processing things, it is really frustrating.

Can somebody who had submitted their application recently at VFS Edinburgh or VFS Glasgow share their timelines?

I Surrendered passport at Manchester VFS in person couple of weeks back but have not received any thing back from them apart from a message they sent last week which read my application is currently being processed. Is there any way I can know the progress of the application?

Thanks
