Re: Indian Passport Surrender Time Line

I have applied @ VFS Edinburgh and it took 5 weeks for Indian Consulate in Edinburgh to issue me certificate.

I would recommend anyone to apply via post which is quicker unless you can use any VFS in London.

My question : Have anyone applied on the same time and Birmingham zone and received surrender certificate, please let me know, I have a travel plan and again I have to calculate 5 year VISA time .

Surrendring Indian passport

Post by redjet » Fri Nov 08, 2013 12:53 am

Hello,

While surrendering indian passport,

One of the documentation requires attaching the photocopies of British Passport.

Anyone who has applied confirm, if all the pages (including empty ones) need to be photocopied and attached to the application?

For the Indian passport, it is very clear saying "attach photocopies of used pages" and the passport itself.

Thanks for replying.

hi redjet,

It did not require to submit all the pages of British passport, when I applied I submit the first 2 pages and the last page (mainly photo page is required) and I got my SC without any issues.

Thanks ban.s and rambharose. Do you know if I can include just one self addressed special delivery envelope for a family of three for the issue of surrender certificate? I am sending all the three applications in one special delivery.

Thanks

you can send all three applications together but considering these as separate independent applications i would include 3 return envelopes for the return of passport and surrender certificates.

INDIAN SURRENDER PASSPORT FORM HELP

Post by raheelmulla » Sun Nov 10, 2013 7:33 pm

I am filling surrender form for my Aunty and on the form it say spouse name (as per the indian passport) as I have check last pages of indian passport and on spouse names section there is no name of her husband. As she was not married at a time when indian passport was issue.

So my question is as she is married now so do I have to mention the name of her husband on surrender application form or shall I write not applicable.

THANKYOU IN ADVANCE.

I have email from vfs

Dear Mr Mulla,

Thank you for your email.

On the surrender application form, applicants only need to mention their spouse name if it is mentioned on the Indian passport. If it not mentioned then they can mention NA.

 thankyou.

Do we get the Indian passport back or do we just get a surrender certificate?

I have also seen passports returned without corners clipped and without any cancelleation stamp. Just looking at the passport you won't realise it's a cancelled passport. It doesn't make any difference though as long as a surrender certificate is available.

Hi,
I need some guidance from anyone who has applied for surrendering the Indian passport in person at the Visa application centre in London.
How much approx time does it take for submitting the application. I mean, considering any security check, waiting etc.

For e.g. if you go in at say 12pm, can one be out by 2pm?

Application Date : 21/11/2013 (Sent to Visa application center via Special next day delivery)
VFS Received On : 22/11/2013
VFS sent to HCI : Not sure
HCI Under processing confirmation : Not sure, no status change on website
Surrender Certificate Issue Date : 27/11/2013
Receipt of Surrender certificate : 28/11/2013 (included Self addressed special delivery envelope)
Paid by postal order.
Passport with edge cut off and also says acquired foreign nationality and revoked on the front page.

Has anybody applied to surrender indian passport without obtaining British Passport?
I have got my Naturalisation this week and I am planning to go to India in 2 weeks. As I understood, I have to surrender my Indian Passport before I fly. Can I surrender my Indian Passport while I am waiting for my British Passport? I am hoping that as soon I get my British Passport, I will apply my visa and fly. Can somebody help?

Thanks,
Simsim

You can not do that because one of the document required with your surrender application is copy of your British passport.

You cannot apply for surrendering Indian passport without your British Passport.

If you want to fly urgently, once you get the British passport, you can fly to India on your Indian passport and can return back on your British passport. India allows a grace period of 3 months from the date of obtaining British citizenship to use Indian passport.

Hope this helps

Though details of British/Foreign passport need to be mentioned in the indian passport surrender application form but strictly speaking that's not a mandatory requirement. You can mention 'not yet applied' or something similar. One loses Indian citizenship as soon as s/he is naturalised. Passport is a travel document and there are many british citizenship without a british passport. However for practical purposes, especially for any urgent travel needs, it's safe to obtain British passport prior to cancelling the Indian one.
You can use your Indian passport for travel upto 3 months from the naturalisation date. So you don't necessarily need to surrender before you fly - if you intend to return back with 3 months grace period.
Also you won't incur penalty if passport was retained for upto 3 years but not used for travel.
